History of the Festival

The yearly Rock the Ocean festival was started with the intention of promoting ocean protection. Captain Robert Hamady and his wife Carlene, an in-flight administrator, founded the Tortuga Rum Company, Ltd. in 1984 when they were employed by Cayman Airways.

In order to appeal to the expanding tourist and ship passenger industries, they initially launched Cayman Islands rums. In addition to launching the now renowned Tortuga Caribbean Rum Cake at this time, they also launched the first Tortuga duty-free booze store in 1987.

Using a four-generation-old family recipe, Carlene has been making rum cakes for special occasions for years.

Through ticket sales and donations, the Tortuga Music Festival has given more than $3.2 million to its Conservation Village partners. The festival collaborates with the Rock the Ocean Foundation to increase public awareness of the issues affecting the world’s oceans and to fund scholarly research, educational initiatives, and ocean conservation projects.

The basis of the event, Conservation Village, invites more than 20 charity organizations to the festival to inform the audience about ocean conservation through participatory events like Eco barters, where actors trade beach rubbish for rewards, and virtual reality shark dives.
