Early life

Willie Hugh Nelson was born on April 29, 1933, in Abbott, Texas. He was introduced to gospel music at a young age by his grandparents, singing alongside his sister and excellent pianist, Bobbie. He began taking mail-order music lessons at the age of six, and by the age of seven, he had written his first song.

Nelson, embracing his musical love, joined a local band called Bohemian Polka at the age of nine, performing in dance halls and honky-tonks to make money.

Despite his early success and the establishment of the Willie Nelson Fan Club by local girls, he stayed dedicated to his schoolwork, engaging in sports including football, basketball, and baseball during his high school years in Abbott.

After finishing his education, he briefly served in the United States Air Force before being discharged due to back issues.

Marriages and Children

Willie Nelson has seven children from four marriages.

1. Martha Matthews

Willie Nelson’s first marriage was to Martha Matthews, whom he met after being medically discharged from the Air Force in 1952. They married the same year when Nelson was 19 and Matthews was 16. They had three children together: Lana, Susie, and Billy Nelson. However, Billy Nelson committed suicide in 1991.

Sadly, their marriage was marked by violence, and Martha assaulted Nelson on multiple occasions. There was an incident where she sewed him up in bedsheets and beat him with a broomstick. They eventually divorced in 1962. Martha Matthews passed away in 1989 at the age of 53 from liver failure.

2. Shirley Collie

In 1962, Willie Nelson began a relationship with musician and yodeler Shirley Collie. Their connection deepened, and they married in 1963. Despite their promising start, their marriage was tainted by infidelity, which came to light when Shirley discovered a hospital bill for the birth of Paula Carlene, a baby girl charged to “Mrs. Connie Nelson.”

Caught off guard, Willie had to confess that Connie was his girlfriend and Paula their daughter. This discovery impacted their relationship, resulting in their divorce and later divorce in 1971. Shirley Collie, a talented musician in her own right, passed away in 2010 at the age of 78.

3. Connie Koepke

Willie Nelson married Connie Kopeke for the third time. They began dating while Nelson was still married to Shirley Collie, and their daughter Paula was born in 1969. Nelson and Kopeke married in 1971 after Nelson divorced Collie. In 1973, they welcomed a second daughter, Amy Lee.

Despite the fact that their family had a peaceful life, Nelson’s growing popularity in the film industry eventually led to the breakdown of their marriage. He began an affair with cosmetics artist Annie D’Angelo and stayed with her for two years before divorcing Kopeke in 1988.

Nelson expressed sorry for causing Connie pain and stated that he will always love her.

4. Annie D’Angelo

Annie D’Angelo is Willie Nelson’s fourth wife. They met in 1986 while working on the film Stagecoach, where Annie was a makeup artist. They took their time in building their relationship, and Willie described his love for Annie as “all-consuming.”

They married on September 16, 1991, at Nashville’s St. Alouin Church. Annie and Willie have two sons together, Lukas Autrey (born in 1988) and Jacob “Micah” (born in 1990), both of whom have followed their father’s musical path.

Annie has played an important role in Willie’s life, not only as his wife but also as his partner in running their cannabis company, Willie’s Reserve. In a 2023 interview, Willie praised Annie for being his lover, wife, nurse, doctor, and bodyguard.

He also acknowledged that living with him is not easy due to his temperamental nature, but Annie has been a special person who has made their relationship work.

Throughout their three-decade-long marriage, Annie has helped manage Willie’s finances and has been instrumental in reducing his payroll and dealing with financial matters. Their successful marriage can be attributed to their strong bond and understanding of each other.

Despite Willie’s previous marriages and the challenges that come with his fame, Annie and Willie have built a lasting and loving relationship.
