Origin and Growth

Bonnaroo Experience

Bonnaroo was brought to life in 2002 by Ashley Capps, who is also a co-founder of AC Entertainment. The concept for Bonnaroo took inspiration from the regrettable cancellation of the Hot Summer Nights rock music festival in Knoxville, Tennessee in 1999.

The inaugural Bonnaroo festival was held on a sprawling 700-acre farm and successfully drew in approximately 70,000 eager visitors. The festival’s name, “Bonnaroo” was thoughtfully chosen as it reflects the vibrant spirit of the event and pays tribute to the lively musical tradition of New Orleans with its Creole slang meaning of “a perfect time.”

Throughout the years, Bonnaroo has experienced remarkable growth both in size and popularity, making it a highly anticipated annual festival for music enthusiasts worldwide.

Unfortunately, due to the unprecedented challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 and severe weather conditions threatening its occurrence again in 2021, Bonnaroo had no choice but to cancel these editions.

Notably, in 2019, Live Nation made an acquisition that granted them part ownership of the festival. Furthermore, Hulu recently announced their exclusive streaming rights for Bonnaroo and other festivals starting in 2022.

As we move forward, Bonnaroo remains distinguished for its exceptional lineup encompassing various genres and its unwavering dedication to fostering a positive and inclusive experience for all attendees.
