MerleFest 2023 (Review)

MerleFest is described by three words: Music, Moments, and Memories.

The extended four-day Americana music festival MerleFest takes place at Wilkes Community College on the last weekends in April. The event serves as a fundraiser for many educational projects.

MerleFest was started in 1988 by late American music legend Doc Watson in honour of his son Eddy Merle Watson, who died in a tragic tractor accident in October 1985. Its goal was to raise funds for Wilkes Community College and to promote the distinctive genre of ‘traditional plus’ music.

Presently, however, it frequently draws crowds that exceed 75,000, making it one of the biggest music festivals in the country. To know more about MerleFest, keep reading.

MerleFest is an annual gathering that unites musicians and music enthusiasts for a unique celebration of “traditional plus” music.

The festival showcases a blend of genres such as Americana, country, blues, rock, and more, with a focus on the traditional sounds of the Appalachian region, including bluegrass and old-time music.

During four days, the festival features performances on a dozen stages, offering a platform for many artists to showcase their talents. In addition to the main stages, there are several smaller stages, like the Traditional stage, that are devoted to a particular genre or topic.

The official mascot of MerleFest is known as “MerleFest Melvin”.

Melvin is a musical raccoon character that represents the festival, which is held annually in Wilkesboro, North Carolina.

It is a raccoon as Merle Watson’s band, Frosty Morn, used a raccoon as its logo.

Why is MerleFest held in April only?

As a memorial to Merle Watson, the late son of famous folk performer Doc Watson, MerleFest was created. The festival is held in April in memory of Merle Watson, whose birthday is April 8th, and as a chance to celebrate his legacy and musical accomplishments.

Additionally, the weather in April is usually ideal in Wilkesboro, North Carolina, where MerleFest takes place. The springtime atmosphere adds to the whole experience, as spectators can enjoy outdoor performances and activities pleasantly.

Moreover, as it is held at the Wilkes Community College, the availability of the venue might be a factor in choosing the festival’s schedule. April fit with the college’s academic schedule, enabling the use of the campus facilities and resources without any major issues.

Although MerleFest generally is held in April, it’s recommended to check the official MerleFest website or contact the event officials for the most up-to-date information on the event’s scheduling or any possible changes.
