CGI performances are not something new for the filmmaking industry. However, have you ever seen these performances being nominated for an Oscar? Or a Golden Globe?
The answer is no. Zoe Saldana recently spoke about this problem, raising awareness and asking some valid questions. Keep reading to find out more about the to pic.

Modern filmmaking has changed the way movies are being produced nowadays. One such important component in today’s world is the use of CGI.
CGI, short for Computer-generated imagery, portrays characters that might be impossible to showcase in real life. For instance, aliens, large mythical creatures, or complex environments.

Zoe Saldana played the role of Neytiri in Avatar (2009). And this character is one of the most iconic examples of a CGI-driven performance. Saldana, throughout the movie, wore motion-capture gear that tracked her every move during the film.
This technology allowed her to deliver top-notch performances with emotional and raw elements. The use of such technology not only requires acting skills but also physical endurance.

Motion-capture technology and CGI go hand in hand. The technology records an actor’s movements and translates them into digital animation, which allows for the creation of realistic CGI characters.
From her facial expressions to the lift of a finger, Zoe was followed by this technology on set to bring Neytiri to life. This way, Saldana’s performance was blended with the digital world of Pandora.

CGI performances, without a doubt, have been overlooked by award shows. There’s no category out there that honors the work done by the collaboration of this technology and the actor.
Traditional acting roles are celebrated enthusiastically, but CGI performances have never been explicitly praised. This gap in recognition indicates a huge gap within the industry.

In a candid interview with the Independent, Zoe Saldana spoke out about how CGI performances are completely overlooked. The actress added, “Old habits die hard, and when you have old establishments, it’s really hard to bring forward change,” Saldaña said on the topic.
“And I understand that, so I’m not bitter about it, but it is quite deflating when you give 120 percent of yourself into something. I mean, not winning is OK, not being nominated is OK, but when you’re overlooked and then minimized and completely disregarded…”

Zoe also didn’t back off from sharing her perspective about people who say she had zero input in her character in Avatar. Viewers of the movie commented, saying most of the work is done by technicians, so why should Zoe be praised?
The actress, in reply, said, “I know the difference between that and what we did. At some point, you have to ask yourself: why is it that I do what I do? Is it so others can give me approval? Or is it because I don’t want to do anything else?”

Zoe further went on to express her thoughts about taking on difficult characters that aren’t highlighted alongside being a woman in the industry. Zoe remarked, “It can be isolating. And I have been in situations where I don’t feel included in the decision-making as much as men.”
She continued, saying, “Our environments aren’t yet fully supportive of women wanting success while having a family.”

James Cameron told Variety, I’ve worked with Academy Award-winning actors, and there’s nothing that Zoe’s doing that’s of a caliber less than that.”
The filmmaker went on to say, “But because in my film she’s playing a ‘CG character,’ it kind of doesn’t count in some way, which makes no sense to me whatsoever. She can go from regal to, in two nanoseconds, utterly feral. The woman is ferocious. She is a freaking lioness.”

Award shows like the Oscars and Golden Globes feature various categories such as Best Actor, Music Score, and Best Actress honor outstanding performances in film.
However, these prestigious award shows don’t consider CGI-driven performances. This exclusion from consideration is usually based on the fact that under CGI performances, the human element is overshadowed.

It’s not only Neytiri’s character in Avatar that’s been overlooked. Andy Serkis is a pioneer in motion-capture acting, famous for his role of Gollum in the Lord of the Rings.
Another notable example is Josh Brolin, raising the bar with his portrayal of Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War. Zoe Saldana’s character as Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy is also the result of CGI technology.

It seems like the use of CGI isn’t just limited to the film industry. In a recent instance, Katy Perry had a run-in with CGI technology.
During her AFL Grand Final Performance, Katy Perry took to the stage with an astounding song choice and bizarre CGI effects. Some fans found the CGI effects unusual and out of place.

Viewers of CGI-influenced movies have quite different opinions regarding the use of this technology.
A fan commented, “CGI has certainly revolutionized the visual aspect of cinema and TV shows. However, like any tool, its effectiveness depends on how it’s used. Sometimes CGI can be overused, leading to a lack of authenticity or immersion in the storytelling.”
Another fan went on to say, “No, CGI is not overused, although its advantages and disadvantages are often misunderstood.”

Some actors have also used CGI, not liking the exaggerated visual effects that come with it. Taika Waititi, while promoting the movie Thor: Love and Thunder, pointed out the poor use of VFX work.
During a breakdown of a particular scene, Waititi was asked whether his character Korg looked real enough, to which he replied, “In that particular shot, no, actually. Doesn’t he need to be more blue.”
However, Marvel almost always hits the spot with its CGI characters, and this fact makes up for part of the franchise’s success. Check out Marvel Cinematic Universe Breaks Records Worldwide to get an insight into the billion-dollar universe.

Ryan Reynolds disliked his Green Lantern costume. Even though Ryan loved the cast of the movie, his green costume didn’t sit well with him.
He tweeted that the computer-generated costume looked like it was made from “old Frogger pixels.”
