Known for his iconic roles in Top Gun, The Doors, and Batman Forever, Val Kilmer, the legendary actor, has left the world at the age of 65. His performances captured hearts and left an impact.
From his breakthrough role as the Iceman to his portrayal of the legendary Jim Morrison, the man was nothing but a versatile actor. However, his story took a turn when Val faced a life-threatening battle with cancer.

Val Edward Kilmer was born on December 31, 1959, in Los Angeles, California. He came with Swedish roots from his mother’s side and German, Irish, and Cherokee heritage from his father’s lineage.
The family faced great challenges and a profound shift following the divorce of Val’s parents. Val was the second of three sons.

Val’s educational journey came with notable achievements and associations. He attended Berkeley Hall School in Los Angeles and Chatsworth High School after ninth grade.
At the ripe age of 17, Val became the youngest student to be accepted into the Juilliard School’s Drama Division at that time. During his tenure at Juilliard, he co-wrote and starred in the play How It All Began.

In 1984, Val Kilmer made his film debut in the comedy Top Secret. He portrayed the character of Nick Rivers, who’s an American rock-and-roll singer.
The film was directed by Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, and Jerry Zucker. Kilmer, being full of diverse talent, performed his singing for the entire film.

Val Kilmer’s portrayal of Lieutenant Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in the 1986 film Top Gun significantly solidified his acting career. In the film, he played a skilled and competitive U.S. Navy fighter pilot.
His character served as a rival to Tom Cruise’s character Maverick. Top Gun achieved both critical and commercial success.

Val Kilmer played the character of Jim Morrison in Oliver Stone’s 1991 film The Doors. His portrayal of the character ended up being celebrated for its depth and authenticity.
Kilmer fully immersed himself in the role and dedicated six months to daily rehearsals and learning 50 of Morrison’s songs. He did a great job of portraying Morrison’s complex persona.

Val Kilmer joined the ensemble cast in Michael Mann’s crime drama ‘Heat.’ He starred alongside Al Pacino and Robert De Niro.
Kilmer played the character of Chris Shiherlis, a skilled thief who finds himself entangled in a high-stakes heist. The film follows the lives of professional criminals and the law enforcement officers trying to catch them.

In the 1998 animated film The Prince of Egypt, Val provided the voice of Moses. His soulful voice did a great job of capturing Moses’s journey as he went from a privileged Egyptian prince to the leader of the Hebrew people.
Once again, Kilmer’s versatility was at the forefront. He did a great job at bringing the character of Moses to life.

In 2014, Val Kilmer started experiencing health issues. These included Val experiencing voice loss and difficulty swallowing.
Initially, he linked these symptoms to less severe causes. However, in January 2015, he was admitted to the hospital for tests concerning a possible tumor, which resulted in the actor being diagnosed with throat cancer.

Val Kilmer’s battle with throat cancer significantly affected his career. Due to the cancer, he had to go through a tracheostomy.
This procedure resulted in permanent changes to his vocal cords, making his speech challenging. However, despite all the challenges, he remained determined to continue with his artistic endeavors.

In 2021, Val Kilmer released the documentary Val. This documentary took the viewers through his journey.
The documentary was directed by Leo Scott and Ting Poo and is a compilation of over 40 years of footage. The documentary included clips from Val’s childhood moments, behind-the-scenes clips from his acting projects, and personal family videos.

In 2022, Val Kilmer made a comeback with his iconic role as Admiral Tom Iceman Kazansky in Top Gun: Maverick. Due to the lasting impacts of his treatment, filmmakers used artificial intelligence to recreate Kilmer’s voice.
Cruise commented on their collaboration: “He became instantly Iceman again.” His comeback was deeply personal for both the actor and the production team.

Val Kilmer married British actress Joanne Whalley in March 1988. However, after eight years of marriage, they divorced in 1996 and have two kids together.
