How Well Do You Know?

Deadpool & Wolverine reshaped the superhero genre, bringing back a fan-favorite actor and showing studios’ willingness to capitalize on profitable opportunities.

While opinions on the film vary, its impact is undeniable. Dive into well-known fascinating facts you might not know about the iconic characters and their dynamic return to the big screen in this game-changing franchise.

How Deadpool Fits into the MCU

The raucous and rated R tone of the “Deadpool” movies made them stand out. This contrasted with the PG-13 strategy used by the MCU.

At first, Disney CEO Bob Iger wondered how Deadpool’s tone would work in the MCU. R-rated Marvel movies did not bother him. Disney, however, kept a careful eye on Deadpool 2’s PG-13 rating to gauge its potential for more R-rated Deadpool films.

One Idea Rejected Early

Reynolds talked with Marvel Studios about Deadpool 3 following Disney’s 2019 acquisition of Fox. He made suggestions, one of which involved Wolverine, but was informed that Wolverine was not allowed.

Hugh Jackman’s declaration that he would not return to the character after Logan and Marvel’s hesitancy to include him in the MCU were the reasons behind this choice.

Deadpool 3: The Mystery Unraveled

Numerous theories circulated about Deadpool 3, including a low-budget road movie with Wolverine and Deadpool and a Rashomon, the Japanese film-like storyline. Karan Soni revealed that the original plan involved Deadpool saving Christmas.

Despite expectations, Zazie Beetz and Josh Brolin both anticipated returning from “Deadpool 2,” but ultimately, neither made an appearance in the third film.

Changes During Pre-Production

Actors have returned to roles after retirement, and in 2022, Hugh Jackman realized it would be “so much fun” to portray Wolverine alongside Ryan Reynolds’s Deadpool.

Though Marvel’s Kevin Feige was hesitant after the perfect conclusion of “Logan,” the MCU’s multiverse allowed for Jackman to play a separate Wolverine from another universe. Director James Mangold supported the collaboration.

Reynolds Brought His Director Along

Reynolds is devoted to his favorite creatives and Deadpool. Levy and Reynolds collaborated on Free Guy, and Reynolds starred in The Adam Project.

Reynolds requested Levy to helm “Deadpool 3,” and Levy accepted, extending their fruitful partnership. Their continued collaborations and appreciation for one another as filmmakers show their friendship.

Original Screenplay Completely Rewritten

Wendy Molyneux and Lizzie Molyneux-Logelin, known primarily for their television writing and producing work, were hired in 2020 to write the next “Deadpool” script, marking one of their first major projects in a Marvel film.

By 2022, “Deadpool” veterans Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese were hired to revise the script. Except the Molyneux pair, the final version gave credit to five writers: Reynolds, Levy, Reese, Wernick, and Zeb Wells, indicating a whole rewrite of the screenplay.

Disney Only Requested a Few Changes

In “Deadpool & Wolverine,” jokes imply that Disney prohibited cocaine use, which is probably true but might also be a joke.

At Disney’s request, a crude allusion to Mickey Mouse was changed to one about Pinocchio in the original draft. It appears that preserving Mickey’s reputation was Disney’s top priority.

Recorded at a Different Studio

Disney has long been the home of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but the entertainment powerhouse did not have access to every Marvel character.

Here, the X-Men movies were also made. Following the success of Deadpool in 2016, 20th Century Fox planned two sequels. In 2017, it was announced that Disney would purchase Fox. That move was completed in 2019.

Snipes and Reynolds Shine Together

Snipes was surprised to be offered the chance to return as Blade, especially with plans for a Blade movie starring Mahershala Ali.

He and Reynolds had worked together on Blade: Trinity, but Snipes didn’t get along with Reynolds’s humor at the time. However, during the filming of “Deadpool & Wolverine,” Snipes finally understood Reynolds’s style and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

Channing Tatum Joins Marvel

Tatum, who plays Gambit in Deadpool & Wolverine, likely wouldn’t have used such a strong Cajun accent in a true portrayal.

However, his cameo wasn’t just for fun. He had long been attached to a Gambit film. The project was eventually shelved. Tatum even approached several directors. This included Levy, to bring the project to life before it was canceled.

Levy Got Real Busy

Although directing a blockbuster Marvel film is a hefty job, Shawn Levy made sure to schedule breaks with both Disney and Marvel.

Filming was scheduled to coincide with the sixth and final season of Stranger Things, which Levy has executive-produced since the beginning. He needed time for both projects because he intended to direct episodes for the season.
