Country music fans and horse racing enthusiasts alike have a special reason to tune into the Kentucky Derby this year.
Toby Keith, the legendary singer-songwriter who passed away in 2024, will be honored in a beautiful and fitting way.
His horse, Render Judgment, is officially set to compete in the world’s most prestigious horse race.
It’s a heartfelt moment that feels like destiny, and it’s one that Keith’s family, fans, and team are celebrating together.

The exciting news broke on Saturday (April 26), just after the 2025 post positions for the Derby were announced. Toby Keith’s team shared a touching post on social media, featuring photos of Render Judgment in action.
“It was Toby’s dream,” the post reads. “Render Judgment is going to the Kentucky Derby. He worked so hard to finally have one there! Toby will have the best seat in the house to watch.”
It’s hard not to feel emotional reading those words, knowing how much this opportunity would have meant to Toby. Even though he’s no longer with us, his spirit will undoubtedly be cheering Render Judgment on from above.
While most fans know Toby Keith for his iconic hits like “Beer For My Horses” and “Should’ve Been a Cowboy,” not everyone realized that he had another great passion, horse racing.
According to a 2024 feature in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Keith wasn’t just a casual fan. He owned and raced thoroughbred horses through his operation, Dream Walkin’ Farms, based on a ranch in Oklahoma that he founded in 2001.
Over the years, Dream Walkin’ Farms made an impressive mark in the racing world, producing 848 victories and earning over $18 million from 6,587 starts. Some of Keith’s most successful horses included Cactus Ridge, Smack Smack, and Three Chords.

Toby Keith’s dedication wasn’t just limited to music and horses; it was reflected in how he faced life’s toughest battles, too.
In June 2022, Keith revealed his diagnosis of stomach cancer. Despite the uphill fight, he made several inspiring appearances, including returning to perform live and accepting the Icon Award at the 2023 People’s Choice Country Awards.
Sadly, after a courageous battle, Toby Keith passed away on February 5, 2024, at the age of 62. His legacy in music, patriotism, and now in the world of horse racing continues to shine brightly.
Though Keith had bred and raced many successful horses over two decades, Render Judgment is the first of his horses to make it to the Kentucky Derby, the crown jewel of horse racing. It’s a dream come true for a man who dedicated so much time and passion to the sport.
In 2021, Keith even partnered with fellow Oklahoma native Danny Caldwell to form Country Bro Stables, further expanding his racing legacy. Together, they celebrated another 39 victories from 264 starts.
Trainer Kenny McPeek, who is guiding Render Judgment toward Derby Day, already has an impressive resume. He won last year’s Derby with the talented colt Mystik Dan.
Meanwhile, experienced jockey Julien Leparoux has been tapped to ride Render Judgment during Saturday’s big race.
As of now, Render Judgment’s odds stand at 30-1, but in a race like the Kentucky Derby, where dreams are made and miracles happen, anything is possible.
Trainer Bret Calhoun, who worked closely with Keith during his career, remembered him fondly:
“He was a big star, larger than life, but he was just a regular guy as well,” Calhoun told the SGV Tribune. “He was so approachable, so easy to talk with. You really enjoyed being around him, and he treated everybody the same. It didn’t matter who you were. He respected everybody.”
Trainer Bret Calhoun, reflecting on Toby Keith’s impact not just in music but in the horse racing community, shared more touching memories:
“He was a guy who loved horse racing, all facets of it,” Calhoun said. “He loved the breeding part of it, the racing, and he was a big promoter of horse racing. Just an overall good guy. A patriotic guy. He was one of those guys that everyone wanted to be around and he kind of kept himself open to the public. He’d go to the races at Oaklawn, go across the street to the local bar and hang out with the people.”
Keith’s authentic and down-to-earth nature made him beloved not just in Nashville but across racetracks and small-town bars where he loved to mingle with everyday folks.

There’s something poetic about Render Judgment racing in the 2025 Kentucky Derby, a final tribute to Toby Keith’s relentless spirit and big dreams.
While Toby might not be there in person, his legacy gallops forward, hoofbeats echoing the heart of a man who loved life, loved people, and loved the thrill of the race.
As the post so beautifully put it, “Toby will have the best seat in the house to watch.”
