Nashville-Season-2-Episode-21-Recap-and-Review-All-Or-Nothing-With-Me

With the Nashville season 2 finale airing tomorrow night, and fans in high spirits after the renewal announcement (with a full 22 episodes!), it’s about time we muse on this rather sweet penultimate episode that aired last week.

Rayna begins the episode by having a conference meeting with radio promoters, as her album release is coming up. She’s cut short, however, when Bucky informs her that when out on a tour of Afghanistan to perform for the troops, Luke has been injured and rushed back home to the hospital. Rayna flies to New York City to see him, and luckily he’s not seriously injured, although the make-up people did a pretty good job of making his face look weirdly cut and swollen. You made Luke a creepy invalid, well done guys! He’s gutted that he never got to perform for the troops, so Rayna suggests they go to Fort Campbell just outside of Nashville and they can all perform. Following a few arguments where he’s been pissy, she asks him why he’s pushing her away, and he admits that when the bomb went off, all he thought about was her and his kids, and he loves her far more than he believes she loves him. However, Rayna tells him she’s all in, but to complete the episode she performs ‘A Life That’s Good’ with her daughters, with Maddie persuading her to invite Deacon out as well.

This episode picked up where last week left off, showing Juliette officially signed to Highway 65. In the first official meeting to discuss strategy, Rayna and Tandy’s intentions to keep her signing under the radar until Rayna’s album release piss off Juliette, who wants to offer digital downloads and shout from the heavens about her return to country music. Grouchy about the fact that her new label head is praising other artists and not her (how much re-assurance and attention does this girl need?!), at an industry party to preview Rayna’s album Juliette gets up on stage and drops the bombshell, prompting the press in attendance to go crazy and infuriating her boss, who knows that things have been screwed up. She decides to invite Juliette to perform a duet with her at her Grand Ole Opry performance the next night, but the reaction isn’t exactly overwhelming and things aren’t looking peachy for Highway 65.

Rayna and Luke have gone public with their relationship, and Luke is really bonding with Maddie and Daphne, especially Daphne, who is enjoying the father figure with a lack of Teddy in the picture. Luke has casually bought Rayna a freaking NASCAR ad on the actual car and invited her to perform her new single and announce her album drop date at a private sponsor showcase he’s playing. Rayna spies Sam Boone, who is basically Mr. Walmart, and decides to woo him for shelf space, offering to show him round the Opry etc. It’s all going well until he tells her that shelf space is decided over a year in advance so she won’t be able to get any. However, growing public outcry against Juliette means Sam decides to stop stocking her albums and he tells Rayna her albums can replace them; one withering look from Maddie and she declines, not wanting to do business the Edge Hill way (girl there’s this thing called iTunes, you’ll be fine). It’s clear also that Luke is pro-Rayna despite being signed to Edge Hill and Jeff is furious, attempting to block off her release with those from Edge Hill.

The drama continues as Juliette tries to overcome the fact that thousands of fans are burning her albums. However, many venues are pulling out of her tour, for threat or for political reasons. Juliette is furious, but becomes increasingly deflated as the episode goes on, and considers that she might lose her entire career. Avery steps in to save the day (after she’s downed a bottle of vodka and passed out), and decides to remind her what she loved about her life in the first place, but dressing her up in disguise and taking her down to the street to perform as someone else. A crowd gathers, and she loves it, but Juliette still decides to go home and mull over everything instead of spend further time with THE GUY WHO IS DOING EVERYTHING FOR HER. Jeez, this girl needs glasses. Meanwhile Jeff turns up at Juliette’s house to have a go at her and threaten her, right up in her face! He demands that she apologizes to the public, even though she doesn’t want to lie. She finally goes to church and makes some peace, and then arrives at Avery’s house to write a song, having “made her decision”.

Nashville returned with a bang last Wednesday night after a Winter hiatus that saw fans eagerly awaiting the news of whether Peggy and Will would bite the dust. Turns out it was Peggy (cue a huge sigh of a relief from most fans of the show) and Teddy is shown having to deal with this intense tragedy, holding back tears during a press conference to announce the detaining of the culprit. However, wrought with grief, he pours over the papers of the investigation, convinced that the murderer’s loss of job 5 years ago is not entirely to blame for his intent to kill. He allows himself to believe that this may be a larger, group plot, and extends the investigation, telling Rayna to keep the kids away so that they don’t come into any potential harm.

NASHVI3

Well this was an interesting episode. There’s a polo match thing going on (does this sound very Gossip Girl to you?) and it seems like everyone’s attending even though they don’t want to. Tandy convinces Rayna that she should go now that Lamar’s assets have been frozen and Rayna wants to buy out her contract, to get some business investment. She hates all these fancy people events but turns up anyway, and proves very popular. But she is having trouble securing people for investment, due to her relationship to Tandy, who everyone is suspicious of because she was CFO at her father’s company for so many years, and must have known about the terrible dealings. Tandy is defensive, as you can imagine, but still doesn’t tell Rayna what she did.

I found this episode an odd one. It was hyped as a big,
dramatic one, and kind of disappointed on that front, as well as cutting short
every good/emotional scene. Anyway.

Rayna is still struggling to get her voice back, even through
voice coaching sessions. Jeff is spreading rumors about her voice being gone
and is demanding the masters of the album, as he owns it. Rayna decides she
definitely wants out of Edge Hill and goes to Lamar to ask for a business
investment into going out on her own. Lamar accepts, and goes to Teddy to ask
if he can invest in his hometown again after the Metro contracts were cancelled
(clearly to cover his losses with Rayna), but Teddy refuses. Meanwhile Tandy
must promise not to tell Rayna about convicting Lamar to ensure her own
immunity. It kills her to find out that Rayna is resting everything on her
father’s shoulders, but she keeps mute, and Lamar later gets arrested in a bar
Teddy is also drinking in. A look from him makes Lamar think that Teddy is the
one who ratted him out, and Tandy is not about to correct him, as she feels
horrible about doing what she did.

Nashville-season-2-episode-2-spoilers

Nashville just keep bringing the amazing episodes. Edge Hill
has been sold and Marshall was fired, in favor of a new label head called Jeff.
He’s a pencil pusher and isn’t too keen on Juliette, as the more mature sound
on her new album isn’t selling enough records. She’s being outsold by ‘The Best
of Rayna Jaymes’ seemingly exploitatively released while Rayna was in hospital.
Juliette is getting irritated by the constant attention on her rival, and
decides to do a CMT special to promote the album. Going back to her hometown
(which is, of course, a trailer park), she seems cool and collected until she
is confronted by old neighbors she grew up with, and old memories, particularly
of her dad, who we find out passed away when she was a kid (drugs?). Meanwhile
she and Avery are getting closer, and I really ship them as friends (with
benefits?). Juliette’s plan works and her single hits #1 on iTunes, rubbing it
in Jeff’s face when she goes to a party at his house. Unfortunately, she soon
finds out it has been knocked straight off #1 by Layla, runner-up on American
Hitmaker (like American Idol), who is younger, more impatient and bouncier than
Juliette. She also performs one of Juliette’s songs at the party, which
apparently was one of her most popular performances on the show. Juliette now
knows what it feels like to be Rayna!
