Sonic the Hedgehog, a beloved video-game character from Sega, made its jump to the big screen with a high-energy adventure for today’s kids. Its fun, fast-paced style captured the hearts of a new generation, cementing its place in modern movie culture.
On the other hand, Mufasa: The Lion King drew on the legacy of the iconic Lion King franchise, appealing to audiences of all ages. With its heartfelt story of family and destiny, it’s a perfect film for multi-generational family groups, uniting fans old and new.

The story of Mufasa revolved around a young Mufasa who, after getting lost, was adopted by Taka’s pride.
When an enemy lion pride takes over Taka’s land, the two young lions set out on a journey to Milele, a mythical haven for lions, reuniting with familiar faces from The Lion King.
The musical drama follows the deep bond between Mufasa and Taka as they grow close like brothers. However, when a dangerous foe tests their friendship, they embark on an adventure that will transform their destinies and their relationship forever.

The story brings Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails together to face their toughest challenge yet. A mysterious villain with extraordinary powers unlike anything they’ve encountered.
This new adversary pushes Team Sonic to their limits, testing their strength and unity. Outmatched in every way, the trio turns to an unexpected ally in a desperate bid to stop Shadow.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King delivered an early Christmas treat to theaters, both debuting on December 20, 2024. But in this box office face-off, Sonic raced ahead, leaving Mufasa in the dust.
Sonic 3 dashed to the top of the charts, proving its blockbuster appeal. Meanwhile, Mufasa struggled to make an impact in its first weekend.

Heading into the weekend, Sonic 3 was expected to edge out Mufasa domestically. However, the gap turned out to be much wider as families and general audiences gravitated toward Sonic’s video game-inspired adventure.
While Sonic 3 soared past expectations, Mufasa: The Lion King lagged behind its opening projections. Despite its grand scale and marketing efforts, the prequel struggled to match the anticipated momentum.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was initially tracking for a trilogy-low debut but surprised everyone by outperforming the original 2020 film’s opening. It came just shy of the 2022 sequel’s series-best $72 million, solidifying its box office strength.
“This is just the beginning,” said Chris Aronson, Paramount’s president of domestic distribution. “Sonic is going to dominate through the holidays,” he added, expressing confidence in the beloved Hedgehog’s enduring appeal.

Mufasa may have underperformed at the box office, but with The Lion King once dominating the film industry, it could still find its footing if word-of-mouth spreads, as seen with Wonka, starring Timothée Chalamet.
The film also benefits from being shown in Imax and other premium large-format theaters, with a strong push for 3D viewings. This could help build momentum and extend its box office run into the new year.

Sonic 3 brought back director Jeff Fowler and a powerhouse cast, including Jim Carrey, Ben Schwartz, Idris Elba, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey. Fans were in for a treat as Natasha Rothwell, Shemar Moore, Adam Pally, and Lee Majdoub also returned in the film.
Ben Schwartz is back as the fast-talking Sonic, with Colleen O’Shaughnessey voiced Tails and Idris Elba bringing the thunder as Knuckles. And who could forget Jim Carrey? The legend is back as Dr. Robotnik, proving retirement doesn’t slow him down.

Sonic 3 welcomed Keanu Reeves to the team, with the actor taking on the fan-favorite role of Shadow the Hedgehog. His casting was a smooth move, adding even more star power to the franchise.
Alongside Reeves, new faces like Alyla Browne and Krysten Ritter also joined the cast. The human ensemble was further rounded out by Cristo Fernández, James Wolk, Jorma Taccone, and Sofia Pernas.

Oscar-winning filmmaker Barry Jenkins, known for Moonlight and If Beale Street Could Talk, directed Mufasa, bringing his unique vision to the film, with music by Lin-Manuel Miranda, the movie stars Aaron Pierre and Kelvin Harrison Jr. as Mufasa and Scar, respectively.
The voice cast also includes familiar faces like Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, Mads Mikkelsen, and Blue Ivy Carter, adding even more star power to this musical drama.

Sonic 3 scored an 86% average on Rotten Tomatoes, showing it wasn’t just a fun family flick but also a critical hit.
The movie continues Sonic’s winning streak after the 2020 release by becoming the highest-grossing video game film adaptation in North America.
On the other hand, Mufasa is facing a tougher reception, with critics giving it a “rotten” 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, though it’s still slightly ahead of The Lion King (2019).

This year, several major four-quadrant films, including Universal’s Wicked, Disney’s Moana 2, and Paramount’s Gladiator II, were released around Thanksgiving. These films are expected to keep drawing strong audiences throughout the holiday season.
Moana 2 set a new record with over $220 million in its opening weekend, continuing to perform well. Wicked and Gladiator II also held strong, with impressive earnings through their second weekends, making this holiday season a big win for these blockbusters.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 didn’t open at the international box office until Christmas, but when it did, it raced to an impressive $74 million, marking the biggest overseas start for the franchise. This strong opening set the stage for a competitive run across global markets.
The film’s international success has already given it a significant boost, helping it secure a solid position at the box office. With more territories to release in, Sonic 3 looks set to continue its winning streak internationally.

Mufasa was expected to rake in around $125 million for its international opening, but it ended up earning lower than expected. This resulted in a total international box office haul that fell short of expectations.
As Mufasa continues to expand into more markets, its performance is improving day by day, and it is now competing strongly for position in the box office rankings.

Mufasa’s underperformance might be the latest sign that audiences are growing weary of Disney’s live-action adaptations of animated classics.
While some of these remakes have been huge commercial successes, others have struggled or failed to meet box-office expectations.
Looking ahead, Disney has two more remakes lined up for 2025: Snow White in March and Lilo & Stitch in May. Additionally, live-action versions of Moana and Tangled are in the works, continuing the trend of reimagining beloved animated films.

Sonic the Hedgehog has already scored big with two hit movies, and the third one is now in theaters. Fans are loving the blue speedster’s journey, and there’s more to come.
Paramount is gearing up for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, set for a spring 2027 release. Plus, with the Knuckles spinoff series out this year, the Sonic universe is growing, giving fans even more to look forward to.
