Not every big-budget movie turns into a box office success. Some films have star-studded casts. Others have massive marketing campaigns.
Yet, they still fail to connect with audiences. Poor reviews, bad timing, or unexpected competition can lead to disaster. These movies became infamous for their staggering financial losses. Here are some of the most shocking movie flops that cost studios a fortune.

Despite its initially odd premise, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles became a pop culture phenomenon. However, not all projects succeeded. The 2016 film was Out of the Shadows. Surprisingly, it flopped and underperformed its predecessor despite having a $245.6 million box office.
This was against a $135 million budget. This happened due to significant marketing costs. The reasons for its failure are unclear. They may include negative reactions to the previous film.

Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman (2017) was a critical and commercial triumph. However, the 2020 sequel was Wonder Woman 1984. It failed to recapture that magic. The film was set during the Cold War. It disappointed audiences with questionable choices.
Despite a $200 million budget, it only grossed $166 million. This was a significant loss for Warner Bros. Beyond its quality, the COVID-19 pandemic impacted its performance as widespread theaters were closed.

Mad Max: Fury Road stunned audiences in 2015. It won six Academy Awards. It was hailed as one of the greatest action movies of all time. However, filmmakers didn’t immediately capitalize on this massive success.
In 2024, Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga finally presented the long-awaited backstory of a captivating character from the previous film. Anya Taylor-Joy starred in the lead role. Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga is the most expensive film in the franchise. It is also the single most expensive film ever made in Australia.

The Power Rangers, a pop culture sensation since the ’90s, saw a modern reboot in the 2017 film Power Rangers. Despite featuring familiar characters with a new cast, audiences showed little interest.
With a budget of at least $100 million, the film only earned around $140 million, resulting in a loss for the studio. This failure was attributed to its departure from the franchise’s fun, campy tone and a surprising PG-13 rating that alienated its younger fanbase.

Indiana Jones is a beloved adventure icon. He is portrayed by Harrison Ford. He returned in 2023 with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. This was fifteen years after the last film. Despite earning $384 million, its massive budget made it one of the costliest movies ever.
Combined with marketing, it flopped, resulting in over $100 million in losses for Disney. Potential reasons include the previous film’s reception.

Star Wars is among the most iconic movie franchises of all time. However, that does not mean the series is without its shortcomings. In 2018, a new film was released. It served as an origin story for Han Solo. He is one of the most beloved characters since the beginning of the franchise.
Although many devoted fans had spent many years wondering how the famed hero came to be, Solo: A Star Wars Story failed to attract nearly as many people as expected. Despite a budget of around $300 million, not including marketing costs, Solo only reeled in less than $400 million.

The MCU’s inconsistent quality peaked with 2023’s The Marvels, a Captain Marvel sequel teaming her with Ms. Marvel and Monica Rambeau. Despite the team-up potential, audience interest was low.
The Marvels became a major box office flop, earning only $200 million against an estimated $378 million budget, excluding marketing. As the MCU’s 33rd film, it was its first outright bomb. Over-saturation of MCU content and underwhelming quality are largely blamed for its failure.

The MCU wasn’t alone in superhero flops in 2023; DCEU’s The Flash, despite focusing on the speedy hero, underperformed. Earning $271.4 million against a $200 million+ budget, it disappointed.
This wasn’t entirely surprising due to the mounting controversies surrounding star Ezra Miller, poor early reviews, strong competition from other superhero films, and the looming DC Universe reboot which rendered the film somewhat irrelevant.

Ava DuVernay’s 2018 adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time, boasting a star-studded cast, failed to resonate at the box office.
Despite the beloved source material and talent involved, the film, with a $130 million budget, earned slightly less. However, factoring in marketing and promotion, the movie resulted in a significant loss estimated at around $152 million, marking a disappointing outcome for the ambitious project.

The X-Men, popular in comics and films, saw a quality dip with 2019’s Dark Phoenix, an origin story for Jean Grey’s transformation. Sadly, it wasn’t a story audiences embraced. Dark Phoenix became a major financial flop, with losses exceeding $100 million.
Its $252.4 million box office couldn’t cover the $200 million budget and substantial marketing. While other factors existed, the film’s poor quality, widely criticized by both critics and viewers, appears to be the primary reason for its failure.

The Matrix franchise, with its initial three hits, saw a downturn with 2021’s The Matrix Resurrections, arriving nearly two decades after the last film.
Despite Keanu Reeves’ return, it failed to recapture the original popularity and had the lowest box office earnings despite its $190 million budget, grossing only $159 million. A key factor in this flop was its simultaneous release on HBO Max, encouraging at-home viewing.

Unlike ambitious flops, 2010’s rom-com How Do You Know failed due to misplaced spending, costing an exorbitant $120 million. Hefty salaries for stars Reese Witherspoon, Owen Wilson, and Jack Nicholson significantly inflated the budget.
Writer-director James L. Brooks’s meticulous filmmaking pace further added to the cost. The familiar story of a softball player choosing between two men didn’t justify this expense, leading to a $140 million loss.

Disney, renowned for top-tier animation, faltered with 2011’s Mars Needs Moms, a bizarre space adventure lacking heart and impressive visuals. Its reliance on motion-capture animation, previously seen in The Polar Express, created an “uncanny valley” effect that alienated audiences.
The film’s dismal $39 million gross against its budget led to a massive $145 million loss. Consequently, ImageMovers, heavily involved in its production, never created another animated movie.

Snow White (2025) is struggling at the box office. It has grossed around $144.1 million worldwide. This is against a hefty $240-$270 million budget. A steep 66% second-weekend domestic drop signals weak audience reception.
This is compounded by a lower-than-projected opening. There were also story changes and comments from the lead actress. These have likely contributed to negative buzz and review bombing. A mixed critical reception further hinders its performance.

The 2020 live-action Mulan remake’s box office failure was heavily influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic. Released in theaters in September 2020 in limited markets, it garnered lukewarm reviews and criticism.
Costing $200 million, it only earned $70 million, resulting in roughly $159 million in losses, a stark contrast to the animated original’s success. In the US and many other regions, Mulan premiered on Disney+ instead of in theaters.
