Robert Eggers has successfully reimagined the 1922 silent classic Nosferatu with a version of his own. With a “haunting” storyline and equally talented cast members, the film was bound to be a hit.
However, It’s worth noting that only true horror film fans can understand and appreciate this version. Keep reading to find out more about the success of the movie.

Critics generally loved the movie, sending in positive reviews. Several applauded Robert Egger’s ability to maintain the timeless gothic essence while reimaging the classic horror story. The meticulous attention to detail and the perfect eerie and immersive background were also praised.
Viewers especially noted the haunting musical score which was able to perfectly complement the film’s darker themes. While some did note the fact that the film might not be for everyone, it was a masterful homage to classic gothic horror.

There’s no doubt in the fact that Nosferatu was released during a highly competitive holiday season. It went up against major films that were able to attract broader audiences.
Among the biggest challengers were Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Despite the intense competition, Nosferatu was able to set a unique tone and carve out a niche by appealing to fans of gothic horror.

Part of Nosferatu’s appeal lies in its backdrop, and much of it belonged to Barrandov Studios in Prague, Czech Republic. Prague’s cobblestone streets, ancient structures, and misty landscapes were also used for on-location shots.
These areas were deliberately chosen by the director to capture the haunting essence of the original 1922 film. Of course, the director also added his unique modern touch, resulting in a horror masterpiece.

Nosferatu was able to garner a whopping $21.6 million in its opening weekend. This placed the film in third position, right behind Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King.
This opening reflected the audience’s strong interest in gothic horror. This success further cemented the growing trend of more sophisticated and visually striking films making waves in the box office.

As of January 12, 2025, Nosferatu has amassed a total of $81.9 million in the United States and Canada. The film’s success in North America has been a significant contributor to its overall box-office achievements.
These figures indicate a positive reception from both critics and audiences. Nosferatu’s success can also be tied to its “pure” horror theme, which other films in the genre sometimes lack.

Nosferatu has earned massively, contributing to a global total of $135.4 million. This figure highlights the film’s strong appeal beyond North American audiences.
The universal themes and Robert Egger’s distinctive direction have played a huge role in the film’s success. Nosferatu, without a doubt, has made praise-worthy contributions to the horror genre’s box office achievements in 2024.

Nosferatu has gained a spot as one of the highest-grossing horror films of 2024, surpassing Longlegs. Longlegs has earned approximately $126.9 million globally with $74.3 million from domestic markets.
This achievement indicates Nosferatu’s strong performance, particularly in the international arena. Starring Nicholas Cage and Maika Monroe, Longlegs had a gripping tale but not more than Nosferatu’s.

Robert Eggers has a reputation for taking on films with challenging storylines. He has directed films like The Witch and The Lighthouse.
Robert has outdone himself with Nosferatu, delicately combining the epic scale of The Northman with haunting psychological elements. Egger has made sure to maintain historical accuracy and evoke a timeless theme.

Nosferatu comes with a star-studded cast that has delivered compelling performances, bringing much-needed depth to the film’s gothic narrative. The role of a mysterious and sinister vampire, Count Orlock, is placed by Bill Skarsgård.
Nicholas Hoult plays the role of Thomas Hutter, a kind and caring character who becomes entangled in Orlak’s dark world. And lastly, we see Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, the troubled newlywed.

In Nosferatu 2024, Jarin Blaschke has created a visually appealing experience that pays homage to the 1922 classic while maintaining an air of modernism. We see the film having high-contrast lighting and meticulous composition to resemble the eerie ambiance of early cinema.
The cinematography has been lauded for its on-spot atmospheric tension and visual style. Blaschke’s work in Nosferatu has resonated with audiences and critics alike.

Nosferatu sees a departure from the traditional horror music, adapting more melancholic and tragic elements. And this can be attributed to none other than Robin Carolan, an outstanding composer.
Robert Eggers and Robin Carolan have previously collaborated on The Northman. Carolan’s composition has been described as “haunting, gothic-infused, and meticulously crafted.”

Nosferatu has garnered multiple rewards and nominations across prestigious platforms. The film has earned four Critics Choice Awards, which include awards for Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, and Best Hair & Makeup.
The film has also been awarded Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography by the National Board of Review.
Other award platforms include the Hollywood Music in Media Awards, the Washington D.C. Area Film Critics Association, the San Diego Film Critics Society, and the Chicago Film Critics Association.

Lily Rose has been applauded for her moving performance in Nosferatu. Harper Bazaar has called her performance a combination of “star power with a commitment to her craft.”
Depp, when asked about her role in the movie, said, “It’s the most technical set I’ve ever been on. It was almost like going to film school. It was intimidating and daunting, but an incredible privilege. I’m very proud, very excited.”

According to the New York Times, Wesley Morris, “You can’t find the actor inside Orlok. Skarsgard is acting the man very much at home in the monster.”
Continuing with the statement, “I don’t know how many demons and boogie men he’s played at this point, but he might become the doomscroller’s Lon Chaney.”

The New Yorker says that the new Nosferatu “drains the life from its predecessors.” With enhanced special effects, deeper character exploration, and artfully composed jump scares, Robert has taken a different while paying homage to the original film.
