Gotti’s impeccable production skills were showcased on DMX’s debut album, It’s Dark and Hell Is Hot, which was released in 1998. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart.
In 1998, Irv Gotti collaborated with his brother Chris, and together they founded Murder Inc. Records. Murder Inc. Records is an American record label under the umbrella of Def Jam Recordings.
The label’s name was inspired by the 1930s organized crime group. This reflected Gotti’s ambition to produce nothing but hit records. The record label ended up rising to prominence at a quick pace.
Under the production of Irv Gotti, Ja Rule released his debut album, Venni Vetti Vecci, in 1999. This also marked the first major project from Murder Inc. Records.
The album’s lead single, “Holla Holla,” became a hit, reaching number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. This success played a huge role in establishing Ja Rule as a prominent figure in hip-hop and highlighted Irv Gotti’s work.
Irv Gotti, in 2002, signed singer Ashanti to Murder Inc. Records, recognizing her potential to become a leading R&B artist. Ashanti was able to release her self-titled debut album in 2002, under Gotti’s guidance.
The album’s Foolish became a hit, becoming a chart-topping success. Ashanti’s debut earned her multiple awards.
In 2001, Irv Gotti produced the I’m Real (Murder Remix) for Jennifer Lopez featuring Ja Rule. This collaboration was a major success, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100.
In the same year, Gotti co-produced What’s Luv by Fat Joe featuring Ashanti and Ja Rule. The track was released in February 2002 and became one of Fat Joe’s most successful singles.
Federal agents and NYPD investigators in January 2003 raided the Manhattan offices of Murder Inc. Records as a part of a year-long investigation. It was alleged that Murder Inc. co-founders had financial ties to Kenneth ‘Supreme’ McGriff.
After two long years of legal battles, the two brothers, Irv and Chris Gotti, were acquitted of all charges. It was concluded that there was insufficient evidence regarding the case.
Amid legal challenges and negative media attention, Irv Gotti announced the rebranding of Murder Inc. Records to The Inc. Records in December 2003. This move was solely a strategic one, and it aimed to distance the label from its controversial image.
However, despite the name change, the label continued to face financial difficulties and the departure of key artists. The rebranding effort was part of Gotti’s broader strategy.
In his later years, Irv Gotti faced significant health challenges. He was diagnosed with diabetes, and most of his health complications arose due to the disease.
In early 2024, the record producer suffered a mini-stroke. Since then, Gotti’s health continued to decline, affecting both his physical and mental well-being.
On February 5, 2025, Irv Gotti passed away in New York City at the age of 54. He died due to a stroke, a complication that arose due to his long-standing battle with diabetes.
Despite his efforts to maintain a healthier lifestyle, Irv’s health remained precarious. This ended up resulting in a fatal stroke.
The music community has expressed deep grief and respect for Irv Gotti, honoring his contributions to hip-hop and R&B. Def Jam said in a statement that Gotti and Murder Inc. “reshaped the soundscape of hip-hop and R&B.”
Lyor Cohen added in a statement, “Def Jam has lost one of its most creative soldiers who was hip-hop. He comes from a very tight, beautiful family from Queens, and it’s an honor and a privilege to have known him. Irv, you will be missed.”
Irv Gotti was a man of many talents. He expanded his creative pursuits and developed the anthology series BET Tales.
Tales had a unique format, with each episode inspired by a specific song. The show received praise for its originality and boldness and established Irv as a multifaceted creator in the entertainment industry.
