Marvel Studios has set the stage for an epic showdown with Avengers: Doomsday. The film is expected to redefine the MCU.
Major new additions, an all-star cast, and shocking character returns have led to the installment shaping up to be one of the most ambitious Marvel projects yet. But what makes Avengers: Doomsday truly groundbreaking, and who’s taking over the lead to become Earth’s mightiest heroes?
Yes, you heard it right. Chris Hemsworth, our very own Thor, is making a return. We’ll be seeing Chris Hemsworth once again on our screens as Thor in Avengers: Doomsday.
This will mark his ninth portrayal of the God of Thunder since his 2011 debut. When asked about his openness towards potentially returning to the MCU as Thor again, Chris stated, “I’m completely open to revisiting the popular superhero if there is something unique and fresh and unexpected to do with the character and the world.”
Anthony Mackie will be reprising his role as Sam Wilson in Avengers: Doomsday. Sam has been a central figure in uniting Earth’s heroes against looming threats following the events of Captain America: Brave New World.
Mackie expressed excitement over getting the chance to collaborate again with directors Anthony and Joe Russo. Mackie’s characters will, without a doubt, bring more depth to the storyline.
Sebastian Stan will be returning as Bucky Barnes, of course. This marks Bucky Barnes’s ninth appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
Bucky’s character has gone through a major evolution, which includes going from Steve Rogers’s loyal friend to a brainwashed assassin. His journey and character in the overall universe have been explored by films like Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War.
The size-shifting superhero Ant-Man is going to be portrayed by none other than Paul Rudd in Avengers: Doomsday. Since his debut in Ant-Man (2015), the character has played a huge role in the Avengers’ endeavors.
Rudd’s comedic timing and distinguishing charm make him a favorite amongst audiences. In the upcoming film, Lang’s knowledge of quantum technology is expected to play a vital role in the overall scheme of things.
Guess who’ll be making a return as Loki? Tom Hiddleston, of course. Loki’s character in the entire scheme of things has been quite complex, including his character’s multiple deaths and resurrections across various MCU stories.
Despite these twists, his character always tends to be revived again, exciting fans and audiences alike.
In Avengers: Doomsday, audiences will be introduced to the Fantastic Four. The Fantastic Four features Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards (Mr. Fantastic), Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm (Invisible Woman), Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm, and Ebon Mass-Bachrach as Ben Grimm.
Pedro Pascal’s introduction has excited fans all around the globe. The inclusion of the Fantastic Four has set the stage for completely new dynamics to be explored.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has further expanded its roster by introducing iconic characters from the X-Men franchise. Patrick Stewart has reprised his role as Professor Charles Xavier.
Similarly, Ian McKellen will be returning as Erik Lehnsherr. We’ve got Alan Cumming joining in as Kurt Wagner, along with Rebecca Romijn as Raven Darkhölme and James Marsden as Scott Summers.
Simu Liu will be returning as Shang-Chi. Shang-Chi is the master martial artist in Avengers: Doomsday.
Since his debut in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings (2021), his portrayal has garnered love and acclaim. While the extent of his role’s involvement within the upcoming film is still under wraps, fans are more than eager to see how his character will be integrated into the larger MCU narrative.
Letitia Wright will be continuing with his role as Shuri in Avengers: Doomsday. Shuri was seen taking over the mantle in the aftermath of King T’Challa’s passing.
Wright has expressed excitement about continuing with Shuri’s journey. She stated, “I would like to continue with Shuri. She’s one of my favorite characters, such a blessing.”
Florence Pugh will be returning as Yelena Belova in Avengers: Doomsday. Yelena has become a fan-favorite since her debut in Black Widow (2021).
She reprised the role in the Disney+ series Hawkeye, showcasing her character’s depth and versatility. Pugh is also lined up to lead the cast of Thunderbolts (2025).
Danny Ramirez will be reprising his role as Joaquin Torres, the new Falcon, in Avengers: Doomsday. His inclusion has marked a significant milestone for Latino representation within the MCU.
Danny’s character is especially loved by the kids out there. He stated in an interview, “The part that’s been really powerful has been the response I’ve seen from kids that reminded me of myself… I didn’t have anyone in the space to look up to in the same way.”
Harrison Ford has joined the MCU as President Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in Avengers: Doomsday. Ford first played the character in Captain America: Brave New World (2025).
Ford shared his excitement over his MCU debut, stating, “I enjoyed it.” He also went on to praise director Julius Onah and co-star Anthony Mackie for their successful collaboration.
Wyatt Russell will be returning as John Walker, also known as U.S. Agent, in the upcoming film. Russell first portrayed the character back in the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier (2021).
Russell, upon reprising the role, stated, “I really enjoy playing the character, and my experience working with Marvel was an unbelievable working experience. Anytime I get the opportunity or hear about the chance to reprise a character or work for Marvel again, it’s very exciting because the people are wonderful.”
Joe and Anthony Russo, collectively known as the Russo Brothers, are directing the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday. They’ve previously directed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.
Talking about updates, there’s bad news for Marvel lovers. Marvel confirms no “Moon Knight” season 2, disappointing fans across the globe.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to be released on May 1, 2026. The film serves as a significant installment in Phase Six of the MCU.
