Attracting some of the biggest names in Hollywood, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has grown to be a dominant force. But not every famous person was keen to join.
A lack of enthusiasm for long-term brand commitments or schedule issues has caused a significant decline in the number of celebrities over the years. Some of the top celebrities who turned down Marvel are shown below.

Jason Momoa is best known today as DC’s Aquaman, with three films as the hero to his name and a fourth currently in production. But once upon a time, Momoa was almost a Marvel guy; he could have played Drax for James Gunn in Guardians of the Galaxy.
Although he seems perfect for the part, Momoa said in an interview that Drax didn’t appeal to him. He deliberately turned down some action movies to show more of his range. And yeah, as Aquaman, he plays a guy who doesn’t say much and has his shirt off frequently.

As her career took off, Jessica Chastain became one of Hollywood’s most sought-after actors. Major studios took notice of her exceptional performances in such movies. Before long, she had offers from almost every business.
Specifically, Marvel Studios approached with an alluring offer. They wanted her to portray Iron Man 3’s Maya Hansen, the bright scientist who performs an important part in the mysterious plot.

Blunt was forced to turn the movie down because Fox reportedly had her under a contract for a film of their choosing. The studio chose Gulliver’s Travels, the schedule for which prevented her from showing up in Iron Man 2.
Rumors are that she was also offered the role of Peggy Carter in The Avengers, but it is unclear why she turned it down. Possibly after her husband, John Krasinski lost the part of Captain America.

By Odin’s raven! The history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe could have unfolded in an entirely different way if the original casting plan for Thor had worked out. Instead of Anthony Hopkins bringing gravitas and depth to the role of Odin, the powerful Allfather might have been portrayed by none other than Mel Gibson.
In a 2016 interview with The Guardian, Gibson revealed that “a long time ago” he had been approached for the role of Thor’s father but ultimately decided against taking the part.

When Marvel Studios first started casting Iron Man in the mid-2000s, nobody could have imagined how extensive the MCU would grow. For the Pepper Potts role, director Jon Favreau first chose actress Rachel McAdams, who was becoming more and more well-known.
Due to schedule issues with other projects, McAdams declined the part. Instead, Gwyneth Paltrow was chosen. The film’s huge success was mostly due to this casting choice.

A lot of actors were considered for the role of Doctor Strange during the long search for Marvel’s Sorcerer Supreme. Joaquin Phoenix, though, was the closest candidate for the role.
Phoenix began negotiations to play the mystical hero under director Scott Derrickson at Marvel Studios in June 2014. The idea of Phoenix applying his powerful and transformational acting style to such a complex and unusual role thrilled fans.

Marvel chose Matthew McConaughey to play the part of Star-Lord’s father in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. He was a wonderful fit for the film because of his career comeback in Dallas Buyers Club and True Detective. McConaughey seems fit for the part of Ego the Living Planet, even though he was ten years older than Chris Pratt.
But he declined the role, preferring The Dark Tower. He believed that the makers of Guardians were merely bringing a well-known actor to Ego without any clear vision for the movie.

Although she has had the opportunity, she has surprisingly not shown up yet. Her first movie role that was offered was the role of Iron Man 2’s Black Widow.
Blunt had to decline, however, because she had already signed on for Gulliver’s Travels. In eight MCU films, Scarlett Johansson played the famous role of Natasha Romanoff. One of the most important “what could have been” moments is still Blunt’s near casting.
Along with being close friends for life, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck frequently work together. In Hollywood, the two actors have a special connection. But they ended up in a friendly rivalry in at least a single case. The part they had to compete for was the same.
Damon was first offered the renowned role of Daredevil, the blind vigilante from Marvel, before Affleck accepted it. Damon ultimately made the decision to decline, even though he felt a deep connection with the role.

Hugh Jackman was initially passed up for the role of Logan in Fox’s X-Men series in favor of Russell Crowe.
After Dougray Scott left, Crowe suggested Jackman, another Australian, who was hired. Jackman would become famous for his role as Wolverine. Crowe later appeared in Thor: Love and Thunder as a member of the MCU.

Leonardo DiCaprio made it known that he would not portray Spider-Man in James Cameron’s Spider-Man film in the 1990s. Cameron had already starred in Terminator 2 and was set to bring the superhero to the big screen with Carolco Pictures.
Because they liked the script, Sony wanted DiCaprio to play Peter Parker, and he was on a high note following Titanic. Just like he had turned down the role of Robin in Batman Forever, DiCaprio turned down this one as well.

Did you know Amanda Seyfried was almost part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe? The actress recently revealed on Happy Sad Confused that she once had the chance to join the franchise.
Offered the role of Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, she turned it down, unsure of its success. Now, she reflects on what could have been, but has no regrets.

John Krasinski had been suggested to play Captain America long before he made his appearance as Reed Richards in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. He told Ellen DeGeneres that Disney looked into different options before casting Chris Evans and he even tried on the Captain America suit.
But Krasinski felt outmatched when muscular Evans entered. Evans eventually won the part and became associated with the character, while Krasinski went on to play Mister Fantastic in the MCU.

Saoirse Ronan almost played the part before she got the role of Wanda Maximoff. Ronan reportedly showed interest in the role and was used as an idea for Wanda during the early casting of Avengers: Age of Ultron. She immediately refuted the idea though and Olsen was eventually cast.
Since then, the role of Wanda, particularly in WandaVision and Multiverse of Madness, has grown to become one of the most appreciated in the MCU.

Agent Maria Hill in The Avengers was a role that Lindsay Lohan was considered for. Although they were never verified, rumors began to circulate when Lohan stated in her documentary series that a part she tried out for went to an unknown, seemingly referring to Cobie Smulders. Despite not being cast in the MCU, Lohan later stated that she would prefer to play Batgirl.
Due to her contentious career, she hasn’t yet gotten a major superhero role, and Smulders is still Maria Hill in the MCU.
