Are you ready for Middle-earth fans? The Rings of Power is coming back with a third season.
Amazon seems to be dedicated to the epic adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien’s world. Season 3 promises nothing but a grander adventure that’s filled with new lands, powerful alliances, and, of course, Sauron’s scheming.
Amazon officially renewed The Rings of Power for a third season on February 13, 2025, as part of Prime Video’s long-term commitment to the franchise.
Season 3, according to the showrunners, will be more ambitious. The story’s scope will be expanded in the upcoming season while staying true to Tolkien’s world.
Pre-production for Season 3 began in February 2025, with filming scheduled to commence in spring 2025.
The renewal assures fans that the epic saga of Middle-earth will continue. High stakes, grand battles, and deeper character arcs are going to be explored in the upcoming season.
Season 3 of The Rings of Power will be filmed at Shepperton Studios in the UK, the same location used for Season 2 after production moved from New Zealand.
The decision also aligns with Amazon’s multi-year deal with Shepperton, securing a home base for future seasons. The studio is already known for hosting major blockbusters and offers state-of-the-art facilities.
The Rings of Power Season 2 premiered on August 29, 2024, but Amazon has not yet disclosed official viewership figures.
It should be noted that season 2 did see a decrease in viewership. However, Amazon Studios emphasizes building momentum over time with constant long-term investment in the series.
The Rings of Power season 3 will see the return of directors Charlotte Brandstrom and Sanaa Hamri. The two have proved to be instrumental in shaping the series’s visual narrative.
Stefan Schwartz is also going to join the team. Stefan is a newcomer to the series and has done remarkable work on series such as The Walking Dead and The Americans.
Charlotte Brandstrom is a Swedish-French director and has done extensive work in international film and television. The director has been promoted to executive producer for season 3 of The Rings of Power.
She was also the talent behind episodes 6 and 7 of season 1. She also directed multiple episodes in the second season.
Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay have an ambitious vision for season 3 of The Rings of Power. The plan to explore “broader, deeper, and bigger” themes will be followed in the upcoming season.
New monsters will be introduced alongside the showcasing of grander battles. Payne and McKay are committed to maintaining the true vision of J.R.R. Tolkien’s original writings.
Season 3 of The Power Rings is going to adopt a darker tone. This is in line with the events leading up to J.R.R. Tolkien’s original The Lord of the Rings saga.
The season will revolve around the aftermath of Eregion’s fall and Sauron’s occupation. The events that led to the War of the Ring will be developed.
The Rings of Power season 3 will see the return of key cast members. These members have been a significant part of the series’s portrayal of Middle-earth’s rich characters.
Morfydd Clark will be reprising her role as Galadriel, the elven warrior. Robert Aramayo is going to be returning as Elrond, while Charlie Vickers is expected to continue with his portrayal of Sauron.
Season 3 is expected to explore the aftermath of Eregion’s fall and Sauron’s occupation, though Amazon has not confirmed full plot details. This thunderous period will profoundly affect the central characters.
We’ll see the main character arcs played by Ismael Cruz Córdova, Charles Edwards, Daniel Edwards, and Megan Richards being shaped in intriguing ways following the fall of Eregion. The fall of Eregion and Sauron’s dominion is set to reshape the destinities of these iconic characters.
Even though no announcement has been made regarding the introduction of new characters, the series is expected to make new introductions. This will happen to ensure that the series is in line with J.R.R. Tolkien’s expansive lore.
Viewers can anticipate the arrival of Anarion, the brother of Isildur. Another potential addition is Celebrian.
As of February 2025, Amazon Prime Video has not officially announced the release date for season 3 of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. However, given the production timeline, season 3 is anticipated to be released at the end of 2025 or during early 2026.
This projection also aligns with Amazon’s work on previous schedules. Amazon’s commitment to delivering high-quality content is always prioritized.
The first season of the series set a record as Prime Video’s biggest TV premiere in 2022, though Amazon has not confirmed if it still holds the title after Season 2.
The series showcases expansive storytelling. The high production values will continue to captivate audiences with the upcoming season.
The Guardian lauded the series as “rich and gorgeous.” The series, without a doubt, has an unmatched cinematic quality.
The Verge highlighted the smoothness with which the second season built on the first one. BBC described the series as “fantasy television of unparalleled grandeur,” noting its mythic storytelling and out-of-the-world atmosphere.
Amazon is also coming out with a live adaptation of Voltron. Check out James Bond’s future: Amazon MGM & EON’s next move for more information.
Amazon Studios is aiming to produce a total of 50 hours for the series. This will be achieved throughout multiple seasons.
The long-term plan reflects a dedication to exploring the rich narratives and storyline of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Middle-earth. 2024 was the year of book adaptations.
