Man arrested after allegedly stealing a staffer’s car from Kim Kardashian’s Hidden Hills property

A 27-year-old man was arrested at Kim Kardashian’s Hidden Hills property after allegedly taking a vehicle belonging to one of her staff members during a suspected burglary on Sunday, August 9.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department identified the suspect as Trey Mendel. Authorities said a security guard alerted deputies after seeing a man load multiple items into a vehicle at the property. Mendel was arrested at the scene and booked on suspicion of burglary and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent.

Kardashian and her 4 children were not at the property because they are living elsewhere while renovations continue. Reports differ over whether the suspect entered the residence itself, so the extent of his access to the home remains unclear.

Suspect arrested at Kardashian’s Hidden Hills property

The incident occurred Sunday afternoon, August 9, while Kardashian and her 4 children were living elsewhere as renovation work continued at the Hidden Hills property.

Authorities identified the suspect as 27-year-old Trey Mendel. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said he entered the property through a side door and was later seen loading items into a vehicle. Sources close to Kardashian have disputed reports that he entered the residence itself, leaving the extent of his access to the house unclear.

Authorities said Mendel also took a vehicle from the property for an alleged joyride. ABC7, People and the Los Angeles Times reported that the vehicle belonged to a member of Kardashian’s staff.

Security guard alerts authorities

A security guard alerted authorities shortly before 4 p.m. after suspicious activity was observed at Kardashian’s Hidden Hills property. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said a man had been seen loading multiple items into a vehicle.

Hidden Hills is a guard-gated community with private gate guards and patrol officers. Its 3 listed entrances are the Round Meadow, Burbank, and Long Valley gates.

Deputies from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station responded to the property and arrested Mendel at the scene.

Deputies arrest 27-year-old suspect

Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies responded shortly before 4 p.m. and arrested 27-year-old Trey Mendel at the property in the 24800 block of Long Valley Road.

The Sheriff’s Department said Mendel was booked at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station for burglary and taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent. As of August 11, formal charges had not been filed, and the investigation was expected to be forwarded to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office for consideration of filing.

Kardashian and her children were not at the property when the incident occurred.

The property was empty during renovation work

Kardashian and her 4 children are currently living elsewhere while renovations continue at her Hidden Hills property. None of them were present during the August 9 incident.

Kardashian and Kanye West bought the estate for a reported $20 million in 2014. In 2018, Kris Jenner publicly said the property was worth about $60 million. Kardashian later acquired West’s interest in the home and its contents for $23 million during their divorce proceedings.

Published aerial images have shown substantial construction and expansion work underway at the estate in recent years.

Hidden Hills maintains extensive private security

Hidden Hills became an incorporated city on October 19, 1961, covering approximately 1.3 square miles. Nearly the entire city lies within a guard-gated residential community overseen in part by the Hidden Hills Community Association.

The community operates 3 listed entrances, Round Meadow, Burbank, and Long Valley- and maintains private gate guards and patrol officers. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department provides law-enforcement services through the Malibu/Lost Hills station.

Hidden Hills publishes local crime statistics and advises residents to use locked doors and windows, alarm systems, and other home-security precautions in addition to community access controls.

Fun fact: Kardashian testified in Paris in May 2025 about the armed robbery she survived in 2016.

Kardashian has faced serious security incidents before

In October 2022, a man was arrested after entering the gated Hidden Hills community and fighting with security guards near Kardashian’s residence. The Los Angeles Times reported that he was not on Kardashian’s property and did not interact with her or her family.

Kardashian also survived a much more serious armed robbery in Paris in October 2016. The attackers restrained her at gunpoint and stole jewelry valued at millions of dollars, including her engagement ring.

Kardashian returned to Paris in May 2025 to testify at the trial of people accused of involvement in the robbery.

High-profile Los Angeles homes have faced repeated burglaries

Kardashian’s incident follows several highly publicized burglaries involving prominent Los Angeles-area residents. Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban’s Los Angeles home was burglarized in February 2025, and Brad Pitt’s Los Feliz residence was broken into that June.

Los Angeles police later linked the Pitt burglary to a crew suspected of targeting homes belonging to high-profile residents. Police said sophisticated burglary groups had used tactics including monitoring social-media activity and deploying Wi-Fi jammers to interfere with surveillance systems.

In a separate investigation, authorities announced arrests in August 2025 involving a burglary crew linked to at least 92 residential break-ins dating to 2022.

Hidden Hills urges residents to use layered home security

Hidden Hills advises residents to keep doors and windows locked, activate alarm systems when leaving home, and remain alert to suspicious activity.

Residents can also request vacation checks and home-security assessments through the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. The Hidden Hills Community Association maintains gate guards and patrol officers separately.

Los Angeles police have previously warned that some burglary crews use sophisticated tactics, including monitoring social-media activity and using Wi-Fi jammers to disrupt surveillance systems.

Little-known fact: Hidden Hills became an incorporated city in 1961 and originally covered about 1.3 square miles.
