Country music and reality TV fans, get ready—Keith Urban is hitting the road in more ways than one!
The country superstar is set to lead CBS’s upcoming music competition show, The Road, alongside Blake Shelton and Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan.
Unlike any other singing competition we’ve seen, The Road promises to be a gritty, behind-the-scenes look at life on tour, with aspiring artists battling it out city by city in front of real audiences.
If you love live music, rising talent, and an inside look at what it really takes to make it in the industry, this show is for you.
Read on to discover more details about this show!
Music competitions like American Idol and The Voice have dominated reality TV for years, but The Road is bringing something completely fresh to the genre.
Instead of contestants performing on a big stage for celebrity judges, they’ll be traveling from city to city, performing for real audiences and competing to win over local fans.
The format is designed to mimic the real-life struggles of up-and-coming musicians, making it more authentic than ever before.
Shelton and Sheridan have hinted that The Road won’t just focus on the glamorous parts of being a musician—it will highlight the tough, often brutal reality of life on tour.
They have promised a gritty, real look at the hard work, hustle, and heartbreak that comes with chasing a dream in the music industry.
From exhausting schedules to unpredictable audiences, these artists will have to prove they can handle it all. Shelton previously said in a press release:
“There’s so much more to being an artist than just having a great voice. You have to connect with fans, work a room, and learn to handle the ups and downs of touring life. This show is going to separate the ones who just want it from the ones who can actually make it.”
Sounds intense, right?
Keith Urban isn’t new to the reality TV world—he was a judge on American Idol for four seasons.
But this time, he’s taking on a much more hands-on role, working directly with aspiring artists on the road, in real venues, in real time.
Urban has long been vocal about the challenges of making it in the music business.
He knows firsthand that being a great singer is only part of the equation—an artist also has to know how to work a crowd, adjust a performance on the fly, and make every show feel special.
Urban shared his excitement for the show, saying:
“Paying your dues sucks, but there are things in this business that can’t be taught, like how to put together a set list, whether to extend or cut a song during your performance, or how to work the crowd.”
He’s ready to guide these up-and-coming musicians through the realities of touring—something he experienced firsthand in the early days of his own career.
The show will film in Texas, Oklahoma, and Tennessee this spring, taking contestants to real, small- and medium-sized music venues, where they will perform live for real audiences.
One of the most notable stops? Nashville’s legendary Ryman Auditorium—a venue that has hosted some of the biggest names in country music history.
Other stops include clubs and theaters that have been stepping stones for country music legends, making this an exciting opportunity for contestants to experience life on tour firsthand.
