Historic All-Female Crew Completes Brief Spaceflight

The world is moving forward, and so is Blue Origin. Blue Origin recently launched its NS-31 mission, revolutionizing the way things work in the space arena.

The mission, which lasted for almost 11 minutes, was not only about space travel; it was also about shedding light on how accessible space has become. This mission was a milestone for gender representation.

Meet the Crew

The Blue Origin NS-31 mission, launched on April 14, 2025, was a significant milestone. This was the first all-female crewed spaceflight since 1963.

The six-member crew included accomplished women from diverse backgrounds. It included Katy Perry, Lauren Sánchez, Gayle King, Amanda Nguyen, Aisha Bowe, and Kerianne Flynn.

Launch Details

The spaceflight launched at around 8:30 AM CDT (13:30 UTC). This was the 31st flight in the New Shepard program.

The launch took place from Launch Site One, which is located about 30 miles north of Van Horn, Texas. The capsule used was the RSS Kármán Line​ , and the mission lasted for approximately 10 minutes and 21 seconds.

Abroad the RSS Kármán Line capsule, the crew experienced a “suborbital” journey. The flight reached an altitude that crossed the Kármán line.

The internationally recognized boundary of space was 100 kilometers above Earth. During the flight, the crew faced several minutes of weightlessness before it safely came back to earth.

This Blue Origin NS-31 mission is a significant one. Besides being the first all-female crewed spaceflight since 1963, the flight carried women from diverse backgrounds, showcasing diversity.

Aisha Bowe’s Achievement

Aisha Bowe is a Bahamian-American aerospace engineer, entrepreneur, and global advocate for STEM education. She’s the founder and CEO of STEMBoard.

She also served as a NASA rocket scientist. This mission showcases Bowe’s commitment to expanding access to STEM, and she has also inspired young women to pursue careers in science and technology.

Kerianne Flynn’s Dream Realized

​Kerianne Flynn is an American film producer who’s known for her work on independent films such as The Automatic Hate, This Changes Everything, and Lilly. Flynn’s interest in space dates back to 2011 when she signed up as a potential passenger with Virgin Galactic.

Her dream finally manifested into reality on April 14, 2025. Flynn described the experience as a “lifelong dream come true.”

Fashion in Space

For the NS-31 mission, the all-female crew wore custom-designed flight suits. These suits were designed by fashion house Monse, led by creative directors Fernando Garcia and Laura Kim.

The suits were made from flame-resistant stretch neoprene. Underneath, the crew wore garments provided by SKIMS, making sure comfort was prioritized during the flight.

Scientific Endeavors

The all-female crew carried out various meaningful activities. Civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen carried out studies focusing on women’s health and plant pathology.

Similarly, the crew also took part in Blue Origin’s “Club for the Future” initiative. The initiative included the crew members carrying postcards from the public as symbolic space deliveries.

Public Engagement

The mission gained significant attention, attracting both celebrities and media coverage. Oprah Winfrey attended the launch, and she expressed her emotional support for the all-female crew.

Other attendees included Khole Kardashian, Kris Jenner, and Orlando Bloom. The event was also streamed on Blue Origin’s website and YouTube channel, allowing audiences around the world to tune in.

Audience Reaction

This event didn’t sit well with many. One viewer commented on the flight, saying, “I love living in a system that allows billionaires to accumulate so much wealth that they can spend this insane amount of money on a PR stunt.”

Another went on to say, “‘We’re all in this together.’ Not really. Not the appropriate comment after billions were spent to have a mini ‘space’ flight.”
