Justin Baldoni’s legal battle with It Ends with Us co-star Blake Lively is turning into a Hollywood courtroom saga.
His attorney says the Jane the Virgin alum is emotionally and financially crushed, having lost jobs, money, and even some of his standing in the industry.
So what exactly happened? How did things spiral this far? And what does it mean for both stars moving forward?
Let’s break it down.
During a pre-trial conference on Monday, Baldoni’s lawyer, Bryan Freedman, didn’t hold back when talking about how much damage has been done.
He told Manhattan U.S. District Judge Lewis J. Liman that Baldoni and his Wayfarer Studios co-founders, Jamey Heath, and Steve Sarowitz, are in crisis mode.
“They are devastated financially and emotionally,” Freedman stated, according to People.
He also pointed out how quickly public perception turns into reality—especially in high-profile cases like this.
“Not to sound like a four-year-old fighting a four-year-old with ‘they started it,’ but in these kinds of cases, once someone says something, it becomes fact. There’s no way to fight against it.”
In response, Judge Liman basically told both sides to cut it out with the public statements.
With a trial set for March 2026, he doesn’t want any more media leaks that could sway potential jurors.
But let’s be real—this case has already taken over the headlines.

Since Lively’s complaint went public, Baldoni has lost three major jobs—including a big-screen adaptation of Pac-Man, which had been in development since 2022.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, these losses total hundreds of millions of dollars. However, sources say the Pac-Man movie might still happen… once the dust settles.
Wayfarer Studios, Baldoni’s independent production company, still has some projects on the way, including:
While those projects are still moving forward, there’s no doubt the legal drama has made it harder for Baldoni to get new deals.
While the off-screen drama has been far more interesting than the movie itself, It Ends with Us has actually been a massive financial success.
The film, which had a $25 million budget, has raked in $351 million globally.
That’s a huge win for Baldoni, who served as both the director and lead actor in the adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel.
But while the movie made money, its reception was… not great.
Critics slammed it for feeling out of touch with the book’s serious themes, and Lively’s performance in particular got some major backlash.
Even worse? The way Lively promoted the film only fueled the controversy.
This whole mess started on December 20, when Lively filed a complaint against Baldoni with the California Civil Rights Department. She accused him of:
She then spoke to The New York Times, making her accusations very public.
Baldoni wasted no time firing back. He immediately filed a $250 million libel lawsuit against The New York Times, accusing them of biased coverage that favored Lively.
Lively then sued him and his PR team on December 31, claiming they were actively trying to ruin her reputation.
By January 16, things escalated even more. Baldoni filed a second lawsuit—this time for $400 million—against:
He accused them of civil extortion, defamation, and invasion of privacy.
At this point, it’s way more than just two actors fighting—this has turned into a full-scale Hollywood war.
Baldoni was last seen on January 20, taking a break from the madness with his wife Emily and their two kids, Maiya (9) and Maxwell (7), in Maui. Safe to say, he needed some fresh air.
Lively, on the other hand, has been facing backlash of her own.
She’s been sarcastically answering questions about domestic violence (which is a huge theme in It Ends with Us).
And her Barbie-style promotional campaign for the movie didn’t sit well with audiences—especially since it conveniently tied into her haircare and alcohol brands.
That said, her career is still going strong, and she has several major projects lined up.
With the trial set for March 2026, this isn’t ending anytime soon.
In the meantime, both actors will have to deal with:
For now, Baldoni’s best hope is that his It Ends with Us earnings help him stay afloat.
As for Lively? She’ll have to keep dodging questions about her PR choices and her own role in the drama.
But it’s evident that this feud is far from over.
