Country singer and former One Tree Hill star Jana Kramer recently opened up about the financial struggles she faced after her divorce from former football player Mike Caussin.
She shared her story on the podcast I Do, Part 2 with Jennie Garth, Amy Robach, and T.J. Holmes.
Kramer talked about her regret over not signing a prenuptial agreement (prenup) before marrying Caussin and how that decision affected her finances.
Jana Kramer and Mike Caussin got married in May 2015. At the time, Kramer believed that their marriage would last forever.
Because of this, she didn’t think they needed a prenup.
A prenup is a legal agreement that couples sign before marriage to protect their money and property if they get divorced.
Kramer explained that she thought Caussin was “the one,” and she didn’t expect their relationship to end.
So, she didn’t protect her assets before they got married.
During their marriage, Caussin cheated on Kramer, and this led him to go to rehab to get help.
After this first affair, Kramer decided to make him sign a postnuptial agreement (postnup).
A postnup is similar to a prenup, but it is signed after the couple is already married.
Kramer thought this would help protect her finances in case they ever divorced.
Unfortunately, when the couple decided to end their marriage in 2021, Kramer found out that the postnup did not protect her as much as she had hoped.
Her lawyer explained that postnups usually don’t hold up as well in court compared to prenups.
Kramer revealed that after the divorce, she lost almost half of the money she had worked hard to earn.
She mentioned that she was the main earner in the relationship, and she still has to pay child support to Caussin for their two children, Jolie, 8, and Jace, 5.
To deal with the divorce, Kramer created a spreadsheet showing what she thought was fair, but Caussin was ready to fight for more.
This experience was very difficult for Kramer, and she now wishes she had signed a prenup before marrying him to avoid losing so much of her money.
In July 2024, Kramer married soccer coach Allan Russell. They have a 10-month-old son together named Roman.
Before they got married, Kramer’s lawyers strongly advised her to sign a prenup this time.
They told her that signing a prenup is like “getting health insurance” to protect herself financially.
Even though Kramer loves Allan and believes in their relationship, the conversation about a prenup was still very difficult for her.
She said that Allan was understanding and told her, “I will sign it if you want me to sign it.“
Kramer didn’t share whether or not they ultimately signed a prenup, but she did say that the conversation brought up memories of her previous marriage and financial loss.
She admitted that it was a hard discussion to have, but she also didn’t want to go through the same financial stress again.
In 2021, Jana Kramer ended her marriage to Mike Caussin, citing infidelity and inappropriate behavior.
The former couple shares two children: daughter Jolie Rae, born in January 2016, and son Jace Joseph, born in November 2018.
After finalizing their divorce in 2021, Kramer and Caussin worked on their co-parenting relationship, and by 2023, Kramer expressed pride in how they had managed to put aside their past differences for the sake of their children.
The challenges they faced in the first year were tough, but their shared love for Jolie and Jace helped them focus on what truly mattered.
Kramer, now in a happier place, released her latest single, “Warrior,” on September 13, 2024.
The song is dedicated to her new husband, Allan Russell, who she describes as an incredible support in her life.
Kramer welcomed her son Roman with Russell in November 2023, and the song was her way of thanking him for bringing happiness and love into her life after years of personal hardship.
Jana Kramer and her ex-husband Mike Caussin reunited for an honest conversation on her Whine Down podcast, where they reflected on their troubled marriage, difficult divorce, and how far they’ve come since their split in 2021.
The conversation coincided with the release of Kramer’s new memoir The Next Chapter, in which she shares personal stories about their past.
Though initially hesitant about the book, Caussin expressed trust in Kramer’s intent and acknowledged his past mistakes, admitting he unfairly blamed her for their marriage’s issues.
Despite past challenges, the two now have a stronger co-parenting relationship and mutual respect for each other.
As Kramer moves forward in her personal life, she recently married soccer coach Allan Russell in July 2024, after welcoming their baby in December 2023.
Caussin shared his respect for Russell, supporting Kramer’s new relationship and feeling at peace with how their blended family is evolving.
Kramer also expressed excitement and gratitude for her new chapter, embracing her love for Russell and their future together.
Jana Kramer’s story shows how important it can be to plan for the future, even in a happy and loving relationship.
By not signing a prenup in her first marriage, Kramer faced serious financial consequences after her divorce.
Now, she understands the importance of protecting her assets, no matter how much she trusts her partner.
