Netflix has had its fair share of hits and misses when it comes to big-budget films. From Red Notice to The Electric State, the streaming giant has done quite a good job with its films.
Now, Alan Ritchson, the star of the upcoming War Machine, has made a bold statement: he believes his sci-fi thriller will be the “biggest” movie Netflix has ever had. But can the movie truly live up to the hype?

Alan Ritchson first gained attention as Aquaman on Smallville’s television series (2005-2010). His portrayal of Thad Castle in the comedy series Blue Mountain State highlighted his versatility as an actor.
He also played Raphael in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles films. Besides acting, Ritchson also has a knack for singing and songwriting.

In a recent interview, Alan Ritchson shared profound excitement for his upcoming Netflix project, War Machine. The actor stated, “War Machine for Netflix, I think, and you heard it here first, probably gonna be the, no, not probably, gonna be the biggest movie that Netflix has ever had.”
He continued to add, “This movie is gonna be a monster. This is the coolest thing they’ve ever made, guaranteed.”

An upcoming sci-fi action thriller, War Machine, is directed and co-written by Melbourne-born filmmaker Patrick Hughes. Patrick is well-known for The Hitman’s Bodyguard and The Man From Toronto.
The film revolves around the final 24 hours of an exhausting special operations boot camp. This camp is where elite recruits face an unimaginable “extraterrestrial” threat.

The final recruits of the special operations book camp will confront a deadly force from another world. This threat challenges the recruits’ training and resilience.
They will be pushed to their limits as each of them strives to protect humanity. The film promises a perfect blend of military action and science-fiction elements.

War Machine is jam-packed with a diverse and talented cast. On top of the list, we’ve got Alan Ritchson playing the role of the primary Ranger candidate.
Dennis Quaid, known for The Day After Tomorrow and Frequency, is going to be playing a commanding officer overseeing the recruits. Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Blake Richardson, Keiynan Lonsdale, and Daniel Webber are also part of the cast.

The Electric State became Netflix’s most-watched original film right after its release in March 2025. It has surpassed all previous records.
The movie has been ranked number one in 47 countries and appeared in the Top 10 in all countries where Netflix is available.

The Electric State is set in a retro-futuristic 1994. The story follows Michelle, played by Millie Bobby Brown, a teenager who’s searching for her missing brother.
Michelle is accompanied by a robot named Cosmo and a smuggler named Keats (Chris Pratt). Michelle is seen navigating a dystopian America, while she encounters rogue robots and corporate conspiracies.

When talking of the top Netflix movies, Red Notice starring Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds held the record with 230.9 million views. Don’t Look Up, a satirical comedy starring Leonardo DiCaprio, garnered lots of views too.
Extraction, Bird Box, Spencer Confidential, 6 Underground, and Murder Mystery are Netflix’s most-viewed movies. However, despite getting millions of views, these movies have failed to hit the right spot for the viewers.

While films like Extraction and The Gray Man have performed relatively well, others have struggled to impress both audiences and critics. Netflix employs massive budgets and A-list casts for its movies.
However, despite it all, its films have been criticized for being formulaic or inspired. This has raised concerns about the platform’s ability to produce blockbuster hits.

In April 2024, Dan Lin was appointed as the new film chief. This signaled a significant shift in strategy.
Dan Lin aims to diversify Netflix’s movie offerings. This hints at a move that’s away from a focus on big-budget flicks with big-name stars and creating movies that are not necessarily heavily funded but better connect with their audience.

Netflix seems to be solely focusing on star power. Renowned actors and directors can attract audiences, but their presence doesn’t always guarantee success.
Similarly, Netflix’s films heavily suffer from negative reviews and word-of-mouth. These elements can make or break a film, and right now, Netflix’s film box office is suffering because of these.

There’s no doubt that War Machine comes with heavy potential. The presence of notable actors and their performances is expected to draw in a wide audience.
The storyline is going to blend sci-fi and military elements, which is enough to captivate viewers. Netflix’s backing will allow the film to have a wide release, increasing its potential viewership.

Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver is directed by Zack Snyder, and the film ended up getting millions of views within three days of its release. Bird Box, a post-apocalyptic thriller featuring Sandra Bullock, became Netflix’s most-watched film within 28 days of its release.
These films have set a high standard. War Machine has to exceed this standard for it to have its spot in the top position.
While Alan Ritchson waits for War Machine to take the viewers by storm, his series Reacher season 3 tops previous missions, hinting at the series’ appeal.

Alan Ritchson’s bold statement has led to significant buzz among fans over social media. Audiences are eager to see it, and the movie can surpass titles like Red Notice and The Electric State in viewership and popularity.
