Other dignitaries around the world mourned the singer’s death and many have come forward with tributes to pay to the megastar. Among these names are the ‘Country King’ himself, George Strait, Dolly Parton, Willie Nelson, and Barbara Streisand.
So, who was Kris Kristofferson? What did his career look like? And which other celebrities shared a special bond with him are all questions you will be getting the answers to in this article. Let’s get going!
Kristofferson was born on June 22, 1936, in Brownsville Texas. He was the eldest of three children born in a conservative military family and moved to quite a few schools before his family settled in San Mateo, California when he was in junior high.
He graduated high school in 1954 and then proceeded to attend Pomona College in Southern California where he mastered Creative Writing and focused on the work of William Blake.
Having a natural knack for writing, Kristofferson won several accolades including one for a short story competition. Apart from writing, he was also remarkable in extracurriculars like football and held the school’s “Golden Gloves Boxer” title.
He aced graduation from Pomona College with flying colors in 1954 and secured a scholarship to Oxford University, for which he moved to England and pursued a Master’s degree in Literature.
It was at this time that he began singing and writing songs, but as performed for a small label, it did not help him garner fame and hence he returned home after the completion of his education.
Renouncing further education plans, Kristofferson followed in his father’s footsteps and joined the military where he gained training as a ranger and helicopter pilot, eventually being stationed in Germany.
However, all this time, he kept his love for music and writing alive in his heart and ultimately formed a band of soldiers capable of performing at different events.
Having been promoted to the post of Captain by 1965, he was offered a job as an English Instructor at a military academy.
Kristofferson, however, rejected the offer, planning to pursue his love for music and achieve his dream of becoming a country artist, subsequently resigning from the forces.
His decision to resign from the military and pursue a career in music strained his relationship with his parents, to such an extent that he did not talk to his mother for 20 years.
He moved to Nashville with his then-wife and a young daughter and began a meager career, which was not sufficient to support his family.
Hence, he had to do odd jobs, including one as a janitor, to make ends meet. However, he remained unfazed and steadfast as he treaded through the turmoil of his fragile career, initially signing for smaller labels and facing hardships in gaining recognition.
Life became tougher for him when his second child was born in 1969 with health problems that summited medical bills.
Kristofferson persevered through the harsh times and eventually struck the right cord when he sang his first hit song, “Me and Bobby McGee”, which topped the charts and helped gain the attention of Johnny Cash.
From this point onwards, Kristofferson’s career continuously peaked, recording popular songs such as ‘One More with Feeling’ and ‘Help Me Make It Through the Night’.
With his name being recognized as a renowned country music singer, Kristofferson also began a highly successful acting career, starring in beloved movies, such as ‘A Star is Born’ and ‘Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore’.
Kris Kristofferson emerged as an accomplished songwriter as well and garnered several awards and accolades to his name.
