I Am Legend 2 is officially happening. Will Smith is back as Dr. Robert Neville. Michael B. Jordan is also joining in a lead role as his first big project with Smith.
Warner Bros. is producing the film, which will expand on the world of the 2007 original. This sequel marks a major return to one of sci-fi’s biggest stories.

This sequel skips the original ending where Neville dies. Instead, it follows the alternate version of DVD, where he survives. That version shows the Darkseekers as smart, emotional beings.
Neville lets them take back one of their own and leaves New York City. This direction is closer to the book and allows the story to go in a more thoughtful, unexpected direction.

The new story takes place many years after the first film. The world has changed big time as nature has taken over, and old cities are falling apart. Humans are few and far between, living in scattered groups.
The infected creatures may have evolved, too. Everything feels unfamiliar, and survival looks very different from what Neville once knew.

Director Francis Lawrence is back, and the film is still in pre-production. The script’s being worked on, and there’s no trailer yet, as anything online now is fake or fan-made.
A release is likely in late 2025 or early 2026. It’ll hit theaters first, then probably land on streaming, most likely through HBO Max or a Warner Bros. platform.

Writer Akiva Goldsman says the sequel is partly inspired by The Last of Us. The vibe will be deeper and more emotional than before.
The movie will explore what it means to live in a world where humans are no longer on top. Nature is bouncing back, and the line between monster and man is getting harder to define.

I Am Legend hit theaters in 2007, directed by Francis Lawrence and starring Will Smith. The story was based on a 1954 novel, but it changed a lot for the big screen.
Filming in New York City wasn’t easy, as they had to shut down major streets to show the city empty. That haunting look became one of the movie’s trademarks and helped it feel real.

The main story of I Am Legend centers on a virus designed by Dr. Alice Krippin. She re-engineered the measles virus to cure cancer, and at first, it looked like a miracle as over 10,000 people were cured.
But things took a dark turn. The virus mutated and spread fast, wiping out most of the world’s population. The people it didn’t kill turned into aggressive, vampire-like monsters that only come out at night.

The movie’s virus started as a cancer cure as based on a real virus, that got genetically modified. Scientists later debated if something like that could happen.
The idea made the story scarier because it felt possible. No aliens, no magic—just science with consequences. That twist made the story stand out and gave the horror a more believable edge.

Dr. Neville wasn’t just surviving, as he was trying to stay human. He sent out radio calls every day, hoping someone might hear him. He kept maps, tracked the infected, and talked to mannequins to fight off loneliness.
His military background gave him structure, but his routines showed how much he missed real people. It wasn’t just a fight to live, as it was a fight to stay himself.

The infected weren’t just monsters. Early scripts called them “Hemocytes,” and some showed signs of emotion and loyalty. When Neville captured one, the others responded with real anger and planning.
They weren’t mindless as they had instincts, maybe even a leader. These early hints set up the sequel’s idea that the infected are more human than we realized. Neville may have misjudged them.

I Am Legend made over $585 million worldwide, becoming one of Will Smith’s biggest hits. It was rated PG-13 for intense action and creepy visuals.
Writers Akiva Goldsman and Mark Protosevich helped shape the story, and Warner Bros. produced it. The visuals, emotional tone, and music turned it into a classic. That success is why the sequel matters so much today.

Akiva Goldsman was born in 1962 in New York City and grew up in Brooklyn Heights. His parents, Tev and Mira, were child psychologists who started one of the first group homes in the U.S. for emotionally troubled kids.
Before Hollywood, Goldsman worked with kids who had autism and schizophrenia and even started a consulting firm. He spent years writing short stories that didn’t sell, but he never gave up on storytelling.

Goldsman sold his first script in 1991. It was called Indian Summer, but it hit theaters as Silent Fall. That sale launched his Hollywood career. He wrote major films like The Client, Batman Forever, A Time to Kill, I, Robot, The Da Vinci Code, and I Am Legend.
In 2001, he won an Oscar and a Golden Globe for writing A Beautiful Mind. He later produced I Am Legend, helping turn it into one of Will Smith’s biggest hits and one of the highest-grossing movies of the year.

Goldsman helped create hit shows like Fringe, Titans, and two modern Star Trek series—Picard and Strange New Worlds. He’s directed episodes of each and also made the fantasy film Winter’s Tale. In Hollywood, he’s known as a trusted “script doctor,” often hired to quietly rewrite or fix big-budget scripts.
As a producer, he’s backed hits like Hancock, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, and Without Remorse. Now, he’s back with I Am Legend 2, which is ready to expand the world he helped bring to life nearly 18 years ago.

Before I Am Legend, Francis Lawrence made a name for himself directing music videos for pop icons like Lady Gaga, Beyoncé-who recently electrified the Texans Ravens halftime show, Britney Spears, and Jennifer Lopez.
He even won a Grammy in 2011 for “Bad Romance.” He also shot big commercials for brands like Coca-Cola and McDonald’s. His movie career took off with Constantine (2005), then I Am Legend (2007), and Water for Elephants (2011).

Francis Lawrence is best known for directing most of The Hunger Games movies, including Catching Fire and The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes (2023). He’s also behind Red Sparrow, Netflix’s Slumberland, and series like See and Kings.
Now, he’s set to direct I Am Legend 2, Constantine 2, and the next Hunger Games movie, Sunrise on the Reaping (2026). Interestingly, during the filming of the series, Jennifer Lawrence took Ambien during The Hunger Games.
