32 years later, the Obamas are still going strong, despite Craig’s initial doubts.
When Michelle Obama first introduced her future husband, Barack Obama, to her family, her older brother Craig Robinson wasn’t exactly convinced he was “the one.”
In fact, he didn’t even think the relationship would last long enough to become serious.
Wanna know what went down? Keep going.
Craig Robinson, 62, didn’t hold back when recounting his initial reaction to Michelle’s new beau.
On the latest episode of Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast, rebranded as the IMO Podcast, the siblings took a walk down memory lane and shared how Michelle’s early days of dating Barack were met with healthy skepticism, particularly from her protective big brother.
“Mich starts to date Barack, and we don’t know who this guy is. We’re just like, ‘Barack? Who’s got a name like Barack?” he recalled with a chuckle. “And I’m thinking to myself, it’s gonna last like about a month, like most of your relationships did.”
Of course, Michelle, 61, wasn’t going to let that slide without pushing back. “That’s not true. I had many a long-term boyfriend,” she replied. But even after some playful back-and-forth, the siblings didn’t quite see eye to eye on the details of Michelle’s pre-Barack dating life.
Craig also shared how their mother had her own first impression of Barack, one that had more to do with height than politics.
“I remember mom’s first thing was, ‘Ooo, at least he’s tall.’ Because Mich was usually posting up her other boyfriends,” he said, poking fun at Michelle’s past romantic preferences.
At 5’11”, Michelle certainly stood out, and her family noticed when her new boyfriend didn’t need a step stool to look her in the eye.
Still, Craig remained doubtful. “And I said to myself, ‘Well, it’s too bad it’s not gonna last.’”
Being the big brother meant Craig felt a responsibility to vet Michelle’s partner. And when your dad believes that a game of pickup basketball can reveal a man’s true character, that’s exactly what you do.
Robinson shared that his father taught him, “You could learn a lot about a person by how they played a game of pickup basketball.” So at Michelle’s request, he invited Barack to hit the court.
“Obviously, we had a great time playing. This is what I learned, aside from the fact that he’s left-handed so he couldn’t go right at all, most importantly, he was a team player,” Craig said.
“He fit in with the people. So I was able to report back to you, everything was fine, and the rest was history.”

Fast forward to the White House years, and Barack Obama was still lacing up his sneakers until one game went a little too hard.
“Barack put his basketball shoes up once he got his lip busted once he was in the White House playing a pickup game,” Michelle shared.
“He needed, like, 30-something stitches … He had some major speech, this was probably Saturday. He had a major speech on Monday. I was like, ‘This is what I’m saying. You’re playing like you’re 10, and now your lip is split.”
The incident marked the end of his casual basketball days, but not the end of his romantic gestures.
Despite Craig’s early doubts, the Obamas recently celebrated 32 years of marriage. Their love story continues to inspire millions, and Barack isn’t shy about showing appreciation for his wife.
On Valentine’s Day this year, he posted a heartwarming tribute to Michelle on social media: “Thirty-two years together and you still take my breath away. Happy Valentine’s Day, @MichelleObama!”
Michelle has been candid about the challenges of being a public figure, especially when her independence is misunderstood.
Speaking on the Work in Progress podcast with Sophia Bush, she addressed rumors that her recent solo ventures meant trouble in her marriage.
“That’s the thing that we as women struggle with, disappointing people. I mean, so much so that this year, people couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself. That they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing,” she explained.
“This couldn’t be a grown woman just making a set of decisions herself, right? But that’s what society does to us.”

It’s safe to say that Craig Robinson’s prediction was way off.
From an unsure brother sizing up a guy with a “funny name,” to 32 years of marriage, two daughters, and a stint in the White House, Michelle and Barack Obama have proved that love, respect, and a little basketball go a long way.
And Craig? Well, he probably doesn’t mind being wrong about this one.
