For eight successful seasons, Good Bones captivated audiences with its unique family dynamic, featuring the mother-daughter duo Karen E. Laine and Mina Starsiak Hawk, along with Mina’s brother, Tad.
Their heartfelt renovations in Indianapolis not only transformed homes but also showcased the beauty of family collaboration.
Yet, as Season 8 unfolded, viewers sensed an undercurrent of change. Mina Starsiak Hawk later confirmed these suspicions on her podcast, “Mina AF.”
Starsiak revealed:
“My mom and I aren’t in a great place. My brother Tad and I aren’t in a great place, it’s complicated without even being complicated. We don’t really engage much, and the last engagement wasn’t super positive, and that was maybe a year ago.”
The family rift cast a shadow over the series’ future, leading many to believe the Season 8 finale marked the end of Good Bones.
On Aug. 7, 2023, Mina revealed in her podcast, “Mina AF.”
“Today, I filmed my last few pickups for ‘Good Bones.’ Not ‘Good Bones’ Season Eight, but for ‘Good Bones,” she said. “So it is officially, ‘That’s a wrap, folks.’
And the series premiere or, you know, the last season of the series, will air a few months from now, and it’s the end of an era.
“I had to say goodbye to some people today that I have spent my last almost 10 years with,” Starsiak Hawk continued.
Fast forward to July 2024, HGTV astonished fans with an announcement: Good Bones will return for a limited ninth season.
The press release teases exciting new ventures and reconciliations, hinting that the family has found common ground.
“The newest season of HGTV’s hit series Good Bones will follow Mina Starsiak Hawk and her mom Karen E. Laine as their lives evolve past their time renovating homes in Indianapolis,” the statement reads.
Season 9 promises fresh adventures and personal growth for the stars.
Mina will embark on a project to transform a dated lake house north of Indianapolis into a serene family retreat.
“Renovating homes in Indianapolis is the best job in the world, and we’re so fortunate to live out our passion every single day,” said Mina. “It’s incredible to see the revitalization in the neighborhoods we love and to know that we’re playing a part in that.”
Meanwhile, Karen will take a bold leap, investing her retirement nest egg in a Wilmington, North Carolina bungalow, aiming to create a vibrant beachy haven despite unexpected challenges.
“Being able to focus on the projects I’m most passionate about is such a joy,” said Karen. “I’m ready for the freedom to explore what I love the most while continuing our work in the city we call home.”
These new beginnings will unfold over a limited three-week run, offering fans a condensed yet intense look into the evolving lives and relationships of the Good Bones family.
Mina Starsiak Hawk hinted at the improved dynamics on her podcast in June 2024, stating she agreed to return to the show under the condition that the “balance was healthier.”
