Phil Lesh, the founding member of the Grateful Dead, died at the age of 84. Even though the cause of his death has not yet been revealed, the bassist did suffer from his fair share of health complications.
From spectacular live performances to creating soulful tunes, Phil was one talented guy. To find out more about the deceased, keep reading.

The iconic Phil Lesh was born in Berkley, California, March 15, 1940. Phil developed an early passion for music, which led to his eventual stardom.
Phil was already talented growing up, and he further honed this talent by pursuing music studies at the College of San Mateo and then the University of California. It should be noted that Phil didn’t limit his creative curiosity to just music, as the bassist took an interest in arts and literature as well.

Phil’s music journey took a transformative turn when the bassist met Jerry Garcia. The two met via a mutual friend, Tom Constanten.
Garcia, at the time, was an upcoming banjo player with roots set deep in electrical instruments. He was quick to introduce Phil into the world of improvisational rock.

Phil Lesh joined the Grateful Dead in 1965, along with Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir, Ron “Pigpen” McKernan, and Bill Kreutzmann. The band was initially known as “The Warlocks,” but the name was similar to another band’s logo, so they settled on “The Grateful Dead.”
Phil Lesh played a huge role in shaping the band’s unique sound. He didn’t shy away from treating the bass as a lead instrument.

In little to no time, it was realized by everyone around Phil that the guy had an unparalleled bass style. Phil approached the bass with a unique sense of melody and counterpoint.
Phil’s talent when it came to playing the bass was pretty evident, especially during live concerts, with the tune of the bass weaving in and out. His performance would always have unexpected intervals, dissonant and complex.

Phil’s significant contributions as a bassist and vocalist within the Grateful Dead were incomparable. His two most standout songs included Box of Rain and Unbroken Chain.
Box of Rain was released in 1970 on American Beauty and is said to be one of the best songs of all time. Similarly, Unbroken Chain was featured on the album From Mars Hotel in 1974.

The band’s dedicated fanbase, the Deadheads loved Phil and declared him as a central figure in the band. The Deadheads were divided into further categories with one of them named the “Phil Fans”.
During concerts, Lesh’s fans would go all out and chant, “Let Phil Sing”. This shows how much people admired not only Phil’s bassist skills but also his singing.

Phil’s three-decade-long tenure, which spanned from 1965 to 1995 was filled with groundbreaking moments. This not only helped with Phil’s standing in the industry but also solidified the band’s legacy in rock history.
From 1965 to 1995, the most iconic event of this period was Woodstock in 1969 amongst many others. Regardless of no prominent performance in the film by the band, the Grateful Dead’s appearance at the film festival was enough to mark their entry into a completely new industry.

To keep the Grateful Dead’s spirit alive after the death of Jerry Garcia in 1995, Phil Lesh continued his musical journey with several other projects. He performed with The Other Ones, which included the serving members of the Dead.
Lesh also formed Phil Lesh & Friends in the late 1990s summing up to be his most significant projects post Jerry Garcia’s death. He collaborated with artists like Trey Anastasio and Warren Haynes.

In 2012, Phil opened up Terrapin Crossroads. This was a music venue located in San Rafael, California which quickly turned into a vibrant hub for live music and community gatherings where Phil would perform alongside his two sons, Grahame and Brian.
The venue was named after the Grateful Dead’s classic album Terrapin Station. This reflected Phil’s lifelong connection with the classic band.

The Grateful Dead was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. The award was handed over by the Recording Academy.
Recently, the Grateful were included in the 47th class of the Kennedy Center Honorees. The band has conducted a tally of 2,318 concerts in total, which is a world record for sure.

In 2009, Phil and guitarist Bob Weir got together and formed Furthur. This project caught the attention of many and was loved by the OG fans.
Lasting till 2014, both Bob and Phil were dedicated to performing Dead classics and original songs. The duo was quick to gather a following over time, keeping the memory of the Grateful Dead alive.

Phil Lesh, throughout his life, faced several health complications. In 1988, he contracted Hepatitis C, which required him to undergo a liver transplant.
Phil had his fair share of drinking, especially during the peak of his career. He later on was diagnosed with cancer, got treated for it, and then suffered from bladder cancer.

Phil Lesh’s last performance took place in San Rafael on July 21 as part of his Phil Lesh & Friends concerts. Before this, he also performed at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco on May 9.
The group also performed during July. However, Phil was unable to join and was replaced by Sam Grimson.
