Have you ever seen a TV series ending that left you with raging hate for the plot? Fans of the show Insecure shared a similar feeling.
The finale of Insecure left fans divided, with several voicing their displeasure over how Issa Dee’s story ended. The ending sparked passionate reactions; however, this isn’t the first time a TV series has stirred controversy.

Insecure is an American comedy-drama television series that aired on HBO from 2016 to 2021. The show takes inspiration from the acclaimed web series Awkward Black Girl.
The series follows the lives of Issa Dee (Rae) and her best friend, Molly Carter (Yvonne Orji), as they navigate personal and professional challenges. The series revolves around themes of friendship, love, and career struggles.

The last episode of Insecure aired on December 26, 2021, ending its five-season run. In the final episode, we see Issa Dee, played by Issa Rae, rekindling her relationship with Lawrence Walker, played by Jay Ellis.
Viewers had mixed reactions to the series finale. While some viewers appreciated the closure, others ended up being dissatisfied.
A huge group of people concluded that the ending undermined Issa Dee’s personal growth throughout the series. Critics argued that Issa rekindling her relationship with Lawrence went against Issa’s journey towards self-discovery.
Lawrence Walker had a child with another woman. The fans didn’t like Issa’s forgiveness and acceptance of Lawrence.

Fans’ dissatisfaction led them to urge creator and star Issa Rae to reshoot the finale or create another season to change the storyline. Rae has acknowledged the requests, stating that “people are really mad” about the ending.
These strong reactions show how deeply invested fans were in the characters. However, Issa Rae has made it clear there won’t be another season.

Despite the backlash, Issa Rae won’t be continuing with another season. This decision came because the finale was crafted to reflect the character’s growth.
The show had overarching themes. She has gone on to express pride in the series’s conclusion and has no plans whatsoever to revisit or extend the story.

Many viewers had strong opinions about Issa’s final decision to be with Lawrence. This generated a lot of discussion, with some expressing disappointment.
They felt that the ending was too “neat” or “tidy” and that it did not reflect the realistic messiness that the show had previously portrayed. Others acknowledged the show’s importance in representing authentic Black experiences.

Issa Rae also shared how significant last-minute changes had already been made to the ending. Originally, the finale was planned to be set five years in the future.
This would have involved Issa Dee and Molly taking a trip to Morocco. However, just two weeks before filming, Rae felt like the ending didn’t go in line with the story they had been leading for five seasons and ended up re-writing the script.

The trip to Morocco was to be a symbol of personal growth and the resilience of Issa’s and Molly’s friendship. She revised the finale to provide a more grounded and realistic conclusion.
According to Issa, the ending that aired honored the show’s core themes. Issa ends up with Walker, and according to Rae, this conclusion is in line with Dee’s character’s journey.

Lawrence Walker, played by Jay Ellis, was a central character in Insecure. His journey and character arc impacted the series’s narrative to a large extent.
Walker is introduced as Issa Dee’s long-term boyfriend, who’s struggling to find a job, which eventually leads to tensions in their relationship. His unexpected fatherhood adds a great amount of complexity to his character.

Lawrence Walker became a fan favorite on Insecure. A dedicated group of viewers who passionately supported his character went by the name #LawrenceHive.
Lawrence’s presence, or lack thereof, on “Insecure” generated a lot of buzz, particularly during certain seasons. People were very invested in the Issa and Lawrence dynamic, so his absence was notable.

Despite the petition gathering many signatures, Issa stayed true to the storyline. She jokingly acknowledged the petition, saying, “Wow. A sponsored post, though? Like… money was spent?”
However, despite rigorous pushing, Rae chose to keep Lawrence’s character absent from the season. She wanted to focus on revolving the series around Issa’s life without a potential lover.

For Issa Rae, there’s nothing more important than staying true to one’s character. She stated, “Happiness being a choice has been a theme for these two characters for the last couple of seasons.”
Rae knew that not all fans would be satisfied with the ending. She noted that “audiences will have opinions. A lot of people hate Lawrence, but luckily, it’s not their relationship.”

Rae talked about the weight of fan expectations during an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The writer stated, “All the pressure — this was terrifying. Because you’re ending a show, and people are gonna have their opinions.”
She continued to add, “You don’t want to drop it, and we’re on HBO, which, you know, had another popular finale that people felt strongly about, and people come up to me like, ‘Girl, I can’t wait for the final season, just don’t Game of Thrones it.’ “

While Lawrence did have fans who loved him, his character plot also led to extreme negative responses. Ellis revealed in 2020 that he had been “punched” and “slapped” in real life due to Lawrence’s decisions.
This shows how seriously fans take some of the characters in the series. Such reactions also hint at the powerful storytelling and performances portrayed by the cast.

This isn’t the first time a TV series has sparked such strong emotions from viewers. Game of Thrones ending also led to widespread criticism as some viewers didn’t like how several major character arcs reached their conclusion.
