In a heartfelt and emotional announcement, actor Eric Dane, best known for his roles in Grey’s Anatomy and HBO’s Euphoria, has revealed that he has been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) — a progressive and currently incurable neurological disease.
“I have been diagnosed with ALS,” the 52-year-old actor shared in a statement to People on Thursday, April 10. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter.”
ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, gradually diminishing voluntary muscle control and mobility. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms worsen over time, and although treatments exist to help slow progression, there is no known cure.
Despite the gravity of his diagnosis, Dane remains committed to his work and finds strength in continuing to pursue his passion for acting.
“I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of Euphoria next week,” he stated.
The actor’s role in Euphoria, where he plays the complex and controversial character Cal Jacobs, has been one of his most notable performances in recent years. Fans are eagerly anticipating the show’s third season, which is finally heading back into production after an extended hiatus.
Eric Dane’s family has become his primary support system as he faces this life-altering diagnosis. He shares two daughters, Billie, 15, and Georgia, 13, with actress Rebecca Gayheart, 53.
The couple married in 2004 but experienced a rocky period in their relationship over the past several years.
In 2018, Gayheart filed for divorce from Dane after 14 years of marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. However, the couple never finalized the separation.
In a surprising and poignant development, Gayheart filed to dismiss the divorce just one month prior to the public announcement of Dane’s diagnosis.

Dane’s diagnosis comes at a time when he was already in the public eye, and it’s clear he is choosing to face this deeply personal health journey with honesty and courage.
While he’s continuing to work and contribute artistically, he has also asked for compassion and space.
“I kindly ask that you give my family and me privacy during this time,” his statement concluded — a gentle reminder of the human being behind the celebrity.
Just one day before the public learned of Dane’s health condition, Gayheart offered insight into their current relationship status in an interview with E! News on April 9.
“We are best of friends. We are really close. We are great coparents,” she said. “We really figured out the formula to staying a family, and I think our kids are benefiting greatly from it, and we are as well.”
Despite years of uncertainty about their marital status, the couple has prioritized a sense of unity and stability for their children. Their ability to maintain a loving and respectful relationship, regardless of legal labels, is something Gayheart takes great pride in.
“I think it’s important not to look at a relationship that ends as a failure. It’s just a season. It wasn’t a failure. It was a huge success,” she added.
“We were married for… I mean, we are still married, but together for 15 years, and we have two beautiful kids. So I think that’s a successful relationship, and that’s how we look at it.”
ALS is a rare neurological disorder that affects nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles — those used to move, speak, eat, and breathe.
As the disease progresses, individuals lose the ability to perform these functions, which eventually leads to complete paralysis.
Although the disease is relatively uncommon, it has affected several notable figures, including baseball legend Lou Gehrig, for whom it is nicknamed.
While research continues and some experimental therapies offer hope, the prognosis remains difficult for many diagnosed with ALS.

As news of Eric Dane’s ALS diagnosis spreads, support from fellow actors and Euphoria cast members continues to grow. Among them is Emmy-winning actor Colman Domingo, who portrays Ali — Rue’s wise and compassionate sponsor — on the hit HBO series.
Speaking exclusively with People, Domingo, 55, revealed that he had just learned about Dane’s diagnosis.
“I haven’t been able to speak with him yet,” Domingo shared. “I just got the news yesterday too, and I’m wishing him well. I look forward to working with him.”
Though the two actors portray very different characters on the show — Domingo as the grounded, recovering addict guiding Rue, and Dane as the troubled patriarch Cal Jacobs — their off-screen camaraderie and respect are clear.
With production for Euphoria season 3 already underway after a long hiatus, fans are hopeful that both stars will reunite on set soon. Domingo’s words add to the chorus of love and support surrounding Dane, highlighting the close-knit nature of the Euphoria family in difficult times
