George Foreman, the legend that turned his life around, has left this world. He was more than just a two-time heavyweight champion.
George Foreman was a force of nature and anyone who knew him and watched him in the ring wouldn’t say otherwise. Besides being a fighter, he also built a multimillion-dollar empire with his product, becoming a source of inspiration for many.

George Edward Foreman was born on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas. He was raised in Houston’s Fifth Ward, a neighborhood that was characterized by its economic hardships.
Job Corps was a program aimed at helping disadvantaged youth. The program helped these young people by teaching them vocational skills.

After joining the Job Corps, Foreman was sent to Pleasanton, California, where he met Charles Doc Broadus. Charles Doc Broadus was a former U.S. Air Force Sergeant and boxing coach.
Broadus recognized Foreman’s potential and encouraged him to try boxing. This mentorship ended up providing Foreman with a new path, one that came with guidance on every step.

At the 1968 Mexico City Olympics, 19-year-old George Foreman won the gold medal in heavyweight boxing. Foreman’s victory wasn’t just a personal win.
It was also a moment of national pride and after his win, he was paraded around the ring waving a small American flag. This gesture stood in stark contrast to the Black Power salute by sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos.

In 1969, George Foreman transitioned from amateur standout to professional boxer. This journey would end up cementing George’s status as an unstoppable force in the heavyweight division.
He made his professional debut on June 23, 1969. He secured a third-round technical knockout (TKO) against Don Waldhelm in New York quickly gaining an impressive record.

On January 22, 1973, George Foreman went up against champion Joe Frazier at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. Frazier was known for his commanding stage presence and was a crowd favorite.
Despite it all, George dominated the fight from the outset knocking Frazier down in the first round. The fight ended and Foreman was awarded with a technical knockout victory.

On October 30, 1974, George Foreman defended his heavyweight title against Muhammad Ali. The fight was dubbed the “Rumble in the Jungle.”
Ali fought with shrewd strategy, launching a series of precise punches that resulted in a knockout. The Rumble in the Jungle to this day remains one of the most iconic boxing matches around the globe.

In 1977, George Foreman had a profound realization that led him to retire from boxing and dedicate his life to Christian ministry. After losing a boxing match to Jimmy Young, George had a near-death experience in his dressing room.
In that moment he cried out saying, “I still believe there’s a God.” He felt the presence of a divine entity.

In 1987, at the age of 38, George Foreman made an unexpected boxing comeback. His return was met with initial criticism as critics doubted his ability to return to form after such a long hiatus.
He made his comeback debut on March 9, 1987, against Steve Zouski. Foreman ended up securing a fourth-round knockout victory.

On November 5, 1994, at the age of 45, George Foreman once again made boxing history. He reclaimed the heavyweight title, becoming the oldest to do so.
He went against the 26-year-old Michael Moorer and defeated him by knockout. This achievement of Foreman’s to this day, remains one of the most remarkable comebacks in sports history.

In 1994, George Foreman ventured out of boxing and endorsed the George Foreman Lean Mean Fat-Reducing Grilling Machine. The kitchen appliance came with a clamshell design that allowed for simultaneous cooking on both sides.
His association with the product contributed to its widespread success. The success of this product cemented George’s status in the entrepreneurial world.

George Foreman also developed a notable presence in television and media. In 1993, he starred in the sitcom, George, playing the character of a retired boxer who becomes a private detective.
He also participated in the popular reality singing competition The Masked Singer. George slowly became a beloved figure in the entertainment industry.

In the early 1980s, George Foreman established the George Foreman Youth and Community Center in Houston, Texas. The center offers a variety of facilities including a “women’s only” workout area, locker rooms, and over 20 cardio machines.
Foreman was dedicated to making the institute sustainable even while he was facing financial challenges while doing so. The center has undoubtedly helped countless young individuals.

In 2003 George Foreman was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. The induction ceremony took place in New York.
Foreman was honored alongside other boxing stars. During his induction speech, Foreman expressed gratitude, saying, “It’s wonderful. Finally, I’m not the Grillman. I’m a boxing Hall of Famer, and I love it.”

George Foreman, the legendary boxer, passed away on March 21, 2025, at the age of 76. The announcement was made via an Instagram post with the caption stating, “His family “peacefully departed… surrounded by loved ones.”
George’s death was sudden and quite shocking. Similarly, the entertainment industry was recently shaken by the unexpected loss of Liam Payne, leaving fans mourning.

George Foreman’s passing led to an outpouring of tributes from fans, athletes, and public figures worldwide. Mike Tyson commented, “Condolences to George Foreman’s family. His contribution to boxing and beyond will never be forgotten.”
George has left a lasting impact and has made contributions to various impactful causes, joining the many beloved figures the entertainment world mourned in 2024.
