For all of its greatness, the genre has ever been definitively the 'in' thing, and has existed at the fringes of the mainstream music scene. Record labels - and especially large labels - have always been more interested in the mainstream. That's where the majority of the money is to be made, and so it makes commercial sense for big labels to promote commercial music.
