7 Canadian Artists who ruled 2019

Canada isn’t just the land of snow and maple syrup, it’s also produced it’s fair share of popular music acts.

You’ve probably heard of Nickelback, Celine Dion, and Justin Bieber but there are a lot of awesome new artists from the great white north. From Avril Lavigne to Alessia Cara, here are the 7 Canadian Artists the ruled 2019.

Tyler Shaw

Tyler Shaw is a Canadian actor and singer, and the winner of the MuchMusic Coca-Cola Cover Contest in 2012. His debut single “Kiss Goodnight” went Platinum, with his other songs all charting in Canada. His single “WithYou” which launched at the end of 2018 was his second platinum single, with “To the Man Who Let Her Go” charting as well.

Nav

Rapper, songwriter, singer and record producer Nav was busy this year. He dropped 4 albums in the span of three years, including his new one Bad Habits. The album hit number one on the Canadian Billboards US Billboard 200 and US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and charted everywhere else.

His single “Price on My Head” peaked at 18 on the charts, and there are rumours another album may drop next year. If he keeps this flow of albums going, he may reach the success he’s looking for.

Snow

Does anyone remember Snow? He had a smash hit “Informer” back in 1992. It stayed No.1 for seven weeks on the US Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Almost a one hit wonder, his only other hit that charted outside of Canada was “Girl I’ve Been Hurt.” It’s weird to be speaking about Snow at all, but in 2019 his hit single with Daddy Yankee “Con Calma” It went triple platinum, and got as high as 4th on the Dutch chart.

Avril Lavigne

French-Canadian Singer Avril Lavigne is well known. Her breakout single, “Complicated,” reached number one in multiple countries and was the youngest female solo act to have a number one album in the United Kingdom. Here huge hit “Head Above Water” that came off of her new album spoke about her struggles with lyme disease. “Dumb Blonde,” and “I Fell in Love with the Devil” were big hits this year, and it’s likely we’ll see more from her in years to come.

Alessia Cara

Canadian singer, instrumentalist, and songwriter Alessica Cara debut single reached 19 on the Canafian Hot 100 Chart, and peaked at number 5 in the United States. Not to mention her other singles “Stay,” “1-800-273-8255,” “Growing Pains” and “Trust My Lonely” were huge hits as well. “Let Me Down Slowly” released on January 7th, 2019 to critical acclaim, and her other hits on Growing Pains were hits as well. Alessia likes to put all of her emotions into her work, and with her compelling style and flow she’ll probably continue to have critical success.

Shawn Mendes

Young music artist Shawn Mendes has received several awards for his music. After his smash hit album Illuminate topped music charts all over the world and going multiplatinum in Canada, Denmark, Mexico, and Sweden he decided to release a new album in 2018. Massive singles like “If I Can’t Have You” and “Señorita” have both won awards and went number one all over the world. He’s on a track record to infinite success.

Justin Bieber

Although Justin Bieber hasn’t released an album since 2015, he’s still charting on Billboard. On May 10th, 2019 he dropped “I Don’t Care” with Ed Sheeran and became a worldwide hit reaching number one in 26 countries, and peaking at number 2 in the US. He remixed Billie Eilish’s single “Bad Guy” and released the song “10,000 Hours” with Dan + Shay. Along with all of those accomplishments, he just announced on Twitter that he’s working on a new album.
