Jamie Lynn Spears Attempted to Rescue Daughter Maddie After ATV Accident

Last night, reports emerged that Jamie Lynn Spears’ daughter, Maddie Aldridge (8), was seriously injured in an ATV accident and was submerged underwater for a period of time. The initial reports further stated that Spears was not present at the time of the accident.

Today, PEOPLE has clarified, by way of a statement by Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff, Daniel Edwards, some of the details that were previously released. According to Edwards, Spears and her husband, Jamie Watson, were on the scene of the incident and tended to Maddie immediately following her wreck. The eight-year-old, who has been operating ATVs on her family’s property for years, was driving and overcorrected, thereby entering a pond. Her mother, stepfather, and other family members were unable to free Maddie, due to the restraints on the vehicle.

According to PEOPLE:

Within seconds the child’s mother [Spears], step-father [Watson] and other family members reached the pond, dove in and attempted to rescue the child to no avail. The child was trapped and secured by the seatbelt and the ATV’s safety netting. Within two minutes, Acadian Ambulance Services arrived and assisted in freeing the child from the cold waters. This is an extremely tragic accident. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office is asking you to keep this family in your constant prayers as they try to cope with this horrible incident. We ask that you respect their privacy during this time of need.

Following this news update, Britney Spears used social media to ask her fan base to direct their prayers toward her niece at this time.
