It’s hard to believe, but even country music superstars like Sara Evans were once looking for their big breaks. In fact, Evans remembers her personal story like it was yesterday, so perhaps that is why she is the ideal artist to be teamed up with Myrbetriq for the “My Big Break” Sweepstakes!
While having a hand in giving fans the opportunity to attend the CMA Awards in Nashville, TN and follow their dreams toward the ultimate goal of a successful music career, Evans is reminiscing back on a time when she, too, was just a dreamer striving to be a doer.
I got an invitation to go to RCA Records and perform, just with an acoustic guitar, three songs for Joe Galente who was the President. I went in and I actually almost missed my big break (laughs) because I forgot the words to one of the songs and, just for a minute, and it really threw me off. I thought “oh my gosh, I’ve blown it, he just is never gonna sign me.” He called me back later that afternoon and actually offered me a seven-album record deal. So, you know, that’s why I love being involved . . . and working on this sweepstakes because it just goes to show you you never know when your big break is going to come, and that was just everything for me and for my career.
Of course the deal that promised Evans the chance to record seven albums was an unforgettable moment she could define as the exact second she realized she made it, but Evans shared that her career has been made up of a series of “pinch me” moments that were spread over many years.
Anytime an album would go platinum or having a No. 1 or certain performances that I was able to do, and definitely the CMA Awards, which the sweepstakes is offering two country music fans a chance to come to the CMA Awards. Pretty much every time I’ve performed at the CMA Awards or attended them or walked the red carpet, I’ve thought “this is truly, like I am truly a country music star. I am living the life of Loretta Lynn (laughs) or Reba McEntire, and all the things I dreamed about as a child.”
Also included in those moments that made Evans take a step back and realize the magnitude of her progress toward achieving her lifelong dream was the first time she heard her single “Three Chords and the Truth” on the radio. While artists cannot possibly predict when they will first catch themselves coming through the speakers, Evans could not have planned for better timing to have such a monumental experience.
Believe it or not, I was home in Missouri visiting my family and we had just gone out to dinner. We got in the car and I was with my mom. So, I have always said that it was such a blessing because we turned on the radio and “Three Chords and the Truth,” which was my first album, that song came on and they were playing it at our local country station. I just thought “wow, how special is this?” And I’ll never forget it and we both cried.
Leading Evans toward her big break and living a reality most can only dream of was the ability to believe in herself and go after what she wanted with everything she had. And that is precisely the advice she offers to those who are walking in the same shoes Evans wore before that fateful day at RCA Records.
Believe in yourself, pursue your dreams, never give up, you have to work really really really hard. I think a work ethic is so important, and it’s not going to happen for you. You’re the one who’s going to actually have to do it, and even though doors seem to be closing, just find another door because you never really know where your big break is going to come from.
