Occasionally a new song comes along that stops you in your tracks. It’s familiar yet fresh, a welcome change from all of the sameness that has plagued country music for the past few years. Enter Runaway June and their debut single, “Lipstick.”
The song shines with its three-part female harmonies and classic yet clever message. The BBR Music Group/ Wheelhouse Records trio, who have been accurately likened to a Dixie Chicks for a new generation, is made up of Naomi Cooke (lead vocals/guitar), Hannah Mullholland (vocals/mandolin) and Jennifer Wayne (vocals/guitar). Their sound is classic country with a modern twist.
The message here is equal parts simple and profound, their voices immediately catching the listener’s attention as they sing “If you’re gonna love somebody/ yeah you better love somebody/ who ruins your lipstick, not your mascara.” Ah, if only it were that easy.
