Say what you want about Sam Hunt’s music not being country, but there’s no denying that he’s a country boy at heart. Last night, Sam took part in Keith Urban and Vince Gill’s “All for the Hall” benefit show, where he played tribute to the late Merle Haggard.
According to Hunt, he chose the cover of Haggards “The Way I Am” the night before Haggard’s passing, admitting that hearing of his passing “sent chills up his spine.”
Before his song, Hunt reflected on country music and the legends of the genre.
It was a sad day for country music, but it made me realize how grateful I am to be able to do what I’m doing, and it made me realize how grateful I am for Merle Haggard and all these boys on stage behind me and all the people who have come before me in country music who have paved this road that I’m walking on right now. And I want to thank the Country Music Hall of Fame for all you do and for celebrating the rich history of country music.
