Last week, Kelly Clarkson took to the American Idol stage and literally left all of America in tears with her gut-wrenching, stripped down take on “Piece by Piece.” The album version of the song immediately soared to number one on iTunes, but it was the heartfelt rendition that fans were craving.
Less than 24 hours after the teary performance, Clarkson rushed into the studio to record this new take, and we’re very thankful she did. With just her voice and a piano, but minus the sobs of the live show, this version is absolutely breathtaking.
Clarkson chatted with Ryan Seacrest this morning about the song, admitting:
I don’t even think I understood the gravity of [my relationship with my father] until I was pregnant…I don’t think I knew how much that affected me until writing that song. I definitely didn’t know how it would affect me like it does when I sing it live because that’s not fun. It’s awesome, but it’s kind of sad that so many relate to this song.”
