Looks like Jason Aldean has discovered that he’s no Taylor Swift, because the singer has just relented and put all his music back on Spotify.
A year ago (can you believe it’s been a whole year already?), Taylor Swift started a trend of artists leaving Spotify due to their business model of allowing people to listen to music for free. Jason Aldean was one of the first to follow Taylor’s lead and removed all of his music from the streaming service.
At the time, Jason explained his decision by saying, “As artists, we don’t make crap off of streaming. Lots of major record companies are part owners in Spotify, so they’re gonna get their money regardless. I’m more about the small guy. I’m on a smaller label. I’m an indie guy. I’m not the big commercial grocery store. I’m the mom-and-pop store.”
He went on to say that he didn’t want to disappoint fans, but he felt he needed to take a stand for the little guy.
“I want fans to hear my music whenever they want. But there’s also a right and wrong way to do it. It’s easy for everybody to stand back and not take a stand. They think there will be a backlash or don’t understand how it works. It’s easier to go along with what everybody else is doing. For me, I got a lot of friends who make a living writing songs, and those guys are getting cheated.”
It’s not clear what may have changed since then but, according to Billboard, as of Wednesday night all of Jason’s music is officially back on Spotify.
Guess maybe he figured a year was long enough to prove his point. That or he realized that some Spotify money was better than no Spotify money.
