Jennifer Nettles may not be old enough to be Dolly Parton’s mother, but she is old enough to play her on T.V.
Deadline is reporting that Nettles, who recently finished up a successful run as Roxie Hart in the Broadway musical Chicago, is set to star as Dolly Parton’s mother, Avie Lee Parton, in the T.V. movie based on Dolly’s song Coat of Many Colors.
The movie, although written about a real event in Dolly’s young life, is said to not be biographical but rather a “faith-based, family-oriented story about the incidents in her and her family’s life around the time she was 9 years old.”
It’s also not a musical like you might expect, although it will feature music.
Also announced to be joining the cast are NYPD Blue (and Silver Spoons for those readers of a certain age) alum Ricky Schroder who will play Dolly’s dad, and Longmire‘s Gerald McRaney who will play Dolly’s grandfather, Rev. Jake Owens.
Earlier this summer, Dolly chose actress Alyvia Lind to portray a young her in the movie.
No word on when fans can expect the movie to come to television, but we’ll be sure to let you know as soon as we find out. .
