Recently, Little Big Town was forced to cancel some shows because Jimi Westbrook had to undergo vocal surgery. While disappointing for fans, at least two members of the group are enjoying the unexpected perks of the forced downtime.
Philip Sweet & Kimberly Schlapman from Little Big Town joined Lon Helton during this week’s Country Countdown USA and the pair revealed that the cancellations of their July concerts have allowed them to have summer vacation time with their kids for the first time ever.
“We’ve never had a summer off. We’ve been a band for 17 years and never had a summer off,” Kimberly revealed.
“I get to be with my daughter when she’s out of school, and we’re playing, getting ice cream, it’s the most fun thing, doing house projects, I feel all domesticated,” Philip added.
“Me too,” Kimberly agreed. “I had a list as long as my arm, and it’s dwindling, and it’s nice. My list is getting shorter and shorter.”
Nice that they are getting to have fun with the kiddos during their time off.
As for what led to Jimi’s surgery, Philip revealed that it was actually Keith Urban who talked him into it after the doctor recommended surgery for a polyp.
“A lot of other singers have been in the same position, and I think Jimi confided in Keith Urban, who had been down that road, and he said it was the best thing he’d done, and now he sings better than ever, and so Jimi was encouraged by Keith and went forward. I think it’s gonna be the best thing for Jimi. For the long term of Little Big Town, this is the best thing.”
Fans will get to check out Jimi’s hopefully better-than-ever voice when he joins the rest of the group for their first post-surgery show at the Delaware State Fair July 31.
