Here’s some news for you. Keith Urban is ready to embrace electronic dance music. The question now is: are fans ready for Keith to embrace electronic dance music?
Nile Rodgers, producer, guitarist and co-founding member of the band Chic tells Yahoo Music that he and Keith Urban are working on some new music and it sounds like it’s going to be, um, interesting.
“While his driver navigated the SUV through the Manhattan streets to the next interview location, Rodgers proudly played a pair of rough tracks that could best be described as “EDM-country.”
If you watched the CMT Music Awards, you already got a taste of what country EDM may sound like when Lady Antebellum performed with EDM artist, player, performer, or whatever they call themselves, Zedd.
Here’s a reminder.
Rodgers says that he knows that Keith’s fans may have trouble accepting this side of the singer, but he hopes they give it a chance.
“His fans may have some kind of problem at first,” Rodgers admitted. “But my biggest records have always been like that. A lot of people, the only record they ever bought by David Bowie was Let’s Dance. That’s at least [seven] million albums — he’d never sold anything near that before. So his fanbase got angry: ‘This sucks! This is not Ziggy Stardust! That’s not Scary Monsters!’ But it was huge because it spoke to a broader audience. I think a record like this will speak to a broader audience [for Urban], and the country people will come around.”
Well if country fans accepted all the rap collaborations of the last couple of years, I can’t imagine that they would have any trouble with EDM-inspired country. I just hope this isn’t what starts playing on the radio.
One thing that’s not really clear is if this new EDM country stuff is for Keith’s next album or if he’s just collaborating with Nile for Nile’s next project? Hmm.
Well whatever the case, expect to start seeing EDM line dancing in 3 … 2 … 1 …
