Congrats going out to Billy Gilman who spent the weekend celebrating his one-year anniversary by exchanging promise rings with his significant other.
Billy tweeted the news yesterday.
Now just in case you’re unclear what the difference between a promise ring and an engagement ring is, a promise ring is sort of a pre-engagement ring. Urban Dictionary explains it best:
Baby, with this promise ring. I promise that someday, don’t know when or don’t know how but we will get married … Now close the door, it’s getting a little chilly.
While Urban Dictionary’s explanation is poking fun at the promise ring, it’s not yet legal for same-sex couples to marry in Tennessee so the “don’t know when or don’t know how” part of the above explanation is more truth than joke.
Last year, Billy came out the same day as fellow country singer Ty Herndon, stating in a heartfelt video at the time:
“It’s difficult for me to make this video, not because I’m ashamed of being a gay male artist, or a gay artist or a gay person, but it’s pretty silly to know that I’m ashamed of doing this knowing that I’m in a genre and an industry that’s ashamed of me for being me.”
Much continued happiness to Billy and his newly promised man.
