Is iTunes buying Big Machine Records?

Big Machine Records

Back in November, a rumor went around that Big Machine Records, home to Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw, and many more of today’s hottest artists, might be for sale for the tidy sum of $200 million bucks. Big Machine boss Scott Borchetta then quickly poo pooed that rumor.

Now it looks like Mr. Borchetta might have been fibbing just a wee bit.

Hits Daily Double (via Saving Country Music) is reporting that iTunes may be ready to splash down $250 million to buy the label. Reps for iTunes deny the report, but Saving Country Music has a lengthy explanation as to why the deal might make sense for both parties.

Big Machine’s current distribution deal with UMG is up, and Taylor Swift has one more album left on the label before her contract expires, leading to speculation Big Machine wants to sell before they risk losing their superstar. The deal would include all of Taylor Swift’s music.
