Meet this week’s #FeaturedFriday artist: The Rankin Twins

Wow, can you believe it's already Friday again? Well it is so welcome to another edition of our weekly introduction to an artist you should be listening to. Welcome to #FeaturedFriday.

This week we have the sassy and talented Rankin Twins. Now I have to disclose that this week I'm poaching directly from who has been featuring the pair on a pretty regular basis for a while now. The pair's Rankin Road Rules are a hoot and I've been happily following their antics for weeks.

But who are The Rankin Twins? Well they are Amy and April Rankin, or “Number 1” and “Number 2” as they sometimes jokingly call themselves. The pair grew up in Texas and then went away to college. After graduating and trying their hand at regular jobs, they decided to pursue their first passion … music. Unfortunately, they soon came to their first huge hurdle when Amy ended up having brain surgery to remove a tumor.

“I think the obstacles we've overcome help us to be able to channel our experiences, love, doubts and fears into our music. We make an attitude choice daily to make sure we stay positive,” Amy says.

It's definitely that positive attitude that shines through in their music. The gals are goofy, funny, and a pair I could definitely see myself hanging out with. When I was putting together the bits and pieces for this article, the ladies were each working on the questions I had sent them without realizing it. We had a good laugh when they told me they were sitting in the same airport but didn't realize they were both working on the same set of questions for me.

Aside from the fun of watching and listening to a pair of bubbly blondes, their music is pretty damn good too, as you can see in the video below for Jezebel. The pair have spent quite a bit of time on the Texas music charts, and hopefully we'll get the chance to see them on the other charts such as Billboard in the near future.

If you'd like to find out more about Amy and April, you can find them on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, their website, and of course on CMchatlive

Check out the questions they answered for NashvilleGab below.

Introduce yourself – where are you from, when did you first start performing, who got you started, etc.

I'm Amy and I'm April and we are The Rankin Twins…. We are from south Texas, Portland, Tx… We've always loved to sing and we grew up dancing in dance halls on weekends and at Garner State Park in the summers. We are only children so we were our Dad's little boys and he coached us in t-ball meanwhile our Mom was a really shy child so she wanted us to be exposed to all performance type events so we wouldn't be afraid to be in front of others. We used to work up a routine with our next door neighbor every Christmas Eve and perform for the family. Those are some of our favorite memories. We ended up playing sports throughout high school and didn't even get into playing an instrument or writing our own music until after college. In college we won a Dixie Chicks look-a-like contest and got to sit in the front row of their concert in College Station, Tx. That was the moment we realized we wanted to do just that, perform in front of hundreds of thousands. Fast forward about 3 years later and Amy's college boyfriend broke her heart which entail enabled her to write her first song. We recorded our first demo in 2007 and formed a band in early 2008. September 2008 Amy was diagnosed with a brain tumor and after her first surgery, with a tune in mind during the MRI scan, Amy wrote their first Radio single "Headaches and Heartbreaks" which hit top 50 on the Texas Music Charts.

Who has been your biggest musical influence?

We've always loooooved the Dixie Chicks. Their style and performance!! But we also have a huge pop influence like Madonna. Now it's Groups like The Judd's, Band Perry and The Wreckers. Really anything with harmonies we just eat up

What’s the weirdest song on your iPod currently?

(Probably show tunes. April's husband is in the movie business, heck they even had kind of a movie themed wedding. )

Describe your music in three words.

melodic, danceable, relatable

What goals do you have for the future?

We hope to have a single top the charts… I can see it happening and that's the first step! One day we hope to headline the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as well as travel abroad and play. Maybe USO tour but we will play anywhere they'll listen. The ultimate compliment is to be playing for people you've never met and they're singing your songs. It's an incredible thing we hope to never take for granted.

If you could tour with anyone who would it be?

Oooh Eli Young band would be awesome because we have some friends in their crew…. Little Big Town, Dixie Chicks & The Band Perry  would be perfect as well

If they were shooting a movie about your life, who would you want to play you?

Well since we're twins the likely answer would probably be The Olsen Twins but I'm thinking Kate Hudson could just double us.

If you weren't singing, what would you be doing?

Well, we have a full-time photography business called "Twinty Photography" that April started in 2007 so we definitely have that creative bug. Amy would probably go to nursing school as well.

Do you have any hidden talents?

We can both pull our arms completely over and under our bodies without ever letting go of our hands. Well, we used to anyway. Haha

Do you write music or just sing?

We do both. It was important to us from the start to try and write our own music but we are also big believers in that some people were truly only meant to do one or the other and that's ok

Who would be your dream duet?

Well with us it would technically be a trio. Since we don't have power house vocals and offer more of the sisterly harmonies I think it would be cool to collaborate with someone like Natalie Maines or Kimberly Perry. I'm also in love with David Nail's voice

Are you signed to a label and can fans purchase your music?

We are independent. No labels yet. All of our music can be found on iTunes or

Tell fans where they can find you – Twitter, Facebook, website, etc.

The Band Perry – Better Dig Two: The Lyrics

Just a couple of hours ago, The Band Perry released their brand new single ‘Better Dig Two’ which begins their new album cycle (currently untitled and set for release Spring 2013). It is streaming via Rolling Stone and you can listen to it there. I tried Googling the lyrics, however, and nowhere seems to have them yet, so I took it upon myself to transcribe them by ear. I think these are pretty much accurate but please let me know if any alterations need to be made.
