While Chris Stapleton was scooping up ACM Awards in Vegas last night, American Idol 14 runner-up Clark Beckham was probably rehearsing for an appearance on this week’s series finale. While he came oh-so-close to nabbing the Idol crown last year, Beckham built up quite the following with his smooth and soulful voice.
Beckham has added yet another gorgeous cover to his repertoire with his take on Stapleton’s version of “Tennessee Whiskey,” done as a duet with rising vocalist Madison Ryann.
According to Billboard, Beckham’s mother sent him a video of the singer singing a Christmas tune. “My mom insisted that I listen to one of the girls singing in the video. Her name is Madison Ryann. Her vocal tone floored me — as in, I literally fell to the floor!” He soon reached out via Twitter and the two chatted about music, American Idol and meeting up to sing together.
Ryann adds that the choice to cover “Tennesee Whiskey” was an easy one. “It was so great to see the song come together with someone I didn’t even really know to begin with, but who had a similar appreciation for Stapleton’s soul like I did. Singing with Clark was really special. His control and creativity as a vocalist is something I really admire as an artist, and harmonizing with him is something that just happened naturally. That’s the coolest part. We played with an arrangement he came up with right before we shot the video, and it came together with no problem. We have a similar ear, too, so I think it flowed really well. We just had so much fun.”
